Mr Happy Chainsaw were formed in early 2005, born into a local music scene dominated by metal and emo. With a band name based on Alkaline Trio’s song “Mr Chainsaw” they began writing rock music and putting on local shows that gained them a lot of attention from promoters and fans alike.
For 2 years Mr Happy Chainsaw gigged solidly taking their catchy rock music around the UK playing festivals in Skegness with The Vibrators, some of the UK’s best venues supporting some great bands such as TAT, My Awesome Compilation, Engerica, The Glitterati, INME, Koopa and Enter Shikari as well as receiving invites to play in Malta and France and gaining interest from several independent labels.
Early 2008 saw Mr Happy Chainsaw, their drummer and bassist parting company due to personal reasons and commitments elsewhere, causing the band to have a break and re-evaluate the situation. In September 2008 Martin and Scott Richardson were joined by Colchester, grade 8 drummer, Ben Westall and together they got back on track writing new material and re-establishing themselves on the local circuit.
Practicing and recording at Long Track Studios, Marks Tey, Mr Happy Chainsaw found themselves in a situation where writing and performing new material became more fluid and enjoyable causing the 2009 Mini Album “We Appear To Be On Fire” to come together with an excitement and a self satisfaction that was not apparent in earlier Mr Happy Chainsaw work.
The spring of 2009 had Mr Happy Chainsaw playing live sets on local radio station ICR FM, had tracks from the “We Appear To Be On Fire” CD played on regional BBC radio stations and saw them perform at several local festivals.
After trying several bassists for the vacant role and having used session musicians for their shows, in June 2009 Mr Happy Chainsaw were joined by Chris Oliver and the lineup was complete.
