"When sunlight hits certain things it almost creates a musical soundtrack for your mind’s eye. Debutant has the gift of creating these visuals with his music alone.
With a mainly instrumental set Debutant also adds haunting vocals to his masterpieces occasionally. Tracks like ‘Solitude’ refer back to sunlight hitting objects. The introductory guitar moves like a gentle light casting its gaze down. The soft hearted plucking creates the change in colour of a landscape as the sun hits it. Beneath is an introduction of tearful and urgent electric guitar which pushes itself through like someone begging for forgiveness.
‘Thirst’ was the track that introduced Glasgow PodcART to this artist. One of the simplest yet effective songs you are likely to hear. You are almost able to breath in and out with every swell; it compels you to do so. His breathy vocals are so calming that any sense of restlessness or tensity one might have is eradicated. The signature rapid guitar strumming that Debutant uses is more momentous in this song than any other he has produced. What you will find is that in special instances like these your heart will skip a beat.
Debutant means a person who makes a debut before the public. I could not think of a more beautiful way for someone to introduce themselves to people than through music like this. Some doors close and others open. Whenever you feel your door is about to close listen to Debutant and your whole world will open." Glasgow PodcART - ARTIST OF THE WEEK
A combination of simple, dreamy songs augmented by a build-up of shimmering atmospheres. Think textured one-man dream-pop. Or something like that.
If you would like to book Debutant to play a show, all you need to do is send a message or email pquirie@hotmail.com
Some press and reviews:
"Debutant's music ignores genres altogether, sounding something like what would happen if Mark Kozelek and Kevin Shields had an afternoon, a spare room and a multitude of ideas. Definitely worth checking out live" isthismusic?
"This is beautiful; four basic home-made lo-fi bedroom recordings – delicate, basic, fractured, dreamy, creamy and very simple. Uncluttered and turning the lo-fi option and the basic equipment on to a warm positive vibrant less is so much more piece of beauty. Four dreamy textured lo-fi pieces/songs" Organ Magazine - Demo of the Week
"Nostalgic sounds of comfort echo in the best track on this ep, 'Solitude': stunning. The smooth composition drains all worries away, landscapes and the sky become your comforting friends. Yes the guy posesses the voice to do that, comfort you." Crumbs in the Butter
"A solo performer with only an electric guitar and a multitude of pedals to play with he manages to create lovely soundscapes which are layered and layered, his soft vocal over the top the icing on a beautiful cake. It reminded me in many ways of Eluvium and I really enjoyed his short set. The highlight for me was a new song which he named “old bogie” for the evening in homeage to Humphrey Bogart. A stunningly beautiful end to his set which set the night up nicely." The Steinberg Principle
"Debutant from Aberdeen, an impressive singer-songwriter with a penchant for heavily-delayed post-rock guitar, building up from quiet chords to full-on looping ear damage. The show was promoted by Forever Presents, who brought Dan Deacon and Matmos to Dublin last year, and gave respective support slots to Jape and Si Schroeder, the latter my favourite Irishproponent of the shoegaze-y post-rock guitar style. Here, though it was a bit one-man-band Mogwai at the very end, on the whole his set was varied and interesting, and very enjoyable to listen to." Hardcore for Nerds
"Debutant does something rather different with the one man and a guitar formula. Armed with a bank of effects pedals, his set built from a delicate, gentle instrumental introduction through a course of well-crafted songs and shimmering sounds not generally associated with guitars. Compelling stuff. "Whisperin and Hollerin
"Debutant’s blend of post-rock ambience with breathless lyrics was beautiful. Solitude called into mind Ulrich Schnauss and Brian Eno, flowing like little rivulets of darkness." - Narc Magazine
Thanks. I'm afraid I'm night shifting on Monday night so can't make 13th note- but I'll try to get to a gig fairly soon, I see you're playing lots of dates in the central belt so hopefully I'll get to one or other of them.
Cheers, with a grimly desperate profile photo, Jocky
Ha! Yeah been posting on aberdeen music for a while looking for strings players, we finally got a reply just after i messaged you! Hopefully it will work out! Cheers anyway!
Cheers Phil, sorry for the late reply. Yeah was good to see you again. Broken Records were amazing! I see you are moving away? Do you know of any violinists in Aberdeen???
We are very excited to announce our first 'real world' photograph exhibition at the 13th Note in Glasgow. To launch this exhibition, we are putting on a show on the opening night - the 6th July.
Tickets are £4 and all profits of the gig will be given to Yorkhill Childrens Foundation.
You can also bring along a mixed cd which you can swap with someone else. Please include a tracklist and have fun with the cover. This is a great opportunity to promote all the bands you love (or your own band) and show your creative side. Please come along, get some new music & badges, view photos, enjoy amazing bands & say hello. :)
Thank you very much. It was a pleasure to be included on it I have to say. Likewise I like your stuff a lot too and heard the podcast with your track 'Thirst' on it which was cool.
I might catch your gig at the 13th Note, work permitting. Cheers for the kind words and good luck with the move too!
Defo have you on the next tape club release..will be in touch. I have a JamMan in my possession, next week I either fall or conquer..hopefully a bit of both.
Written a song about ghosts, I think, I can call you inspiration!
Hey hey! Loving the tunes!! Been gathering a load of footage of late and will continue to do so. Would like to put something together for you. Probably nick a song and see what happens. If that's all cool with you? Keep up the good work!! Ben
Once again, really enjoyed the set last night, especially the songs with the hushed vocals. It's always a shitter when you get folk like those who were up the back, but I suppose that's the way of things. Fight the power! Hehe.
(VierSieben Records/ AL!VE/ Plastic Head UK ) out now!

...filigree and athmospheric electrosounds, combined with the charismatic vocals of the singer Nic Koray, all in all creating an extraordinarily melancholic and thought-provoking music having no equal...
"Somewhere On The Line is the best debut album in the widened Trip-Hop-Genre since Goldfrapps legendary Felt Mountain" (Zillo Magazine 03/09)
