Pioneer of contemporary, progressive and electronic German music, Stephan Kaske never does things halfway. Surround Sound Offensive is the first title from a series of opus where this excellent composer, sound engineer and multi instrumental artist explores the dynamic sound of Surround Sound Dolby Pro Logic(TM).
A work which takes its entire dimension on an adequate hi-fi system.
As of the first rolling of SSO I starts, we seize all the sound dimension of this brilliant German synthesis’s 19th opus. Symphonic percussions on a synth that chats on vocoder, in a sound fauna of thousand and one orchestral richness. SSO I opens the door to the harmonious sound, sometimes complex, but surprisingly accessible, of Surround Sound Offensive. Eleven tracks which combine the ambient subtleties to sequences full of unforeseeable rhythms. SSO is a surprise box which amazes our ears each time they cross a track. The melodious side of Mythos is always present, but each softness are aromatized of variegated sonorities where the orchestrations are melting to the sound strangeness, as on SSO II; a soft electronic ballade which crescende to whistling orchestrations which are not without pointing out legendary Tomita. A catchy and rich ballade filled of sound effects which deviates on a more accentuated tempo, like SSO IV, SSO VIII, the splendid and awesome SSO V as well as SSO X. Beyond the ballades which hang the daydreams, Mythos always likes to astonish by complex compositions with unexpected unwinding as on the heavy and atmospheric SSO III, SSO VI and its strange amphibious pace combines on a superb sequencer, SSO VII, technoïd SSO IX and the unforeseeable SSO XI.
The strength of Mythos is to develop a daring electronic music, shaped in an avant-gardism sound universe, while maintaining an approach just enough melodious to capture and maintain an auditive interest which grows in each listening. Surround Sound Offensive is an album stuffed with sound effects and sonorities as rich as unforeseen in a curiously harmonious context. For those who like more than conventional stuff…

Mythos – ”Surround Sound Offensive”
Personligen så tycker jag att det är lite ”hit and miss” över det när det gäller musikskivor med 3D-ljud. Ibland så kan det faktiskt bidra till att skapa ett djup i musiken som definitivt tillför en extra dimension.

Det börjar bli allt vanligare att man ser skivor som är mixade för att kunna avnjutas i Surround Sound-utrustning. Det är ett intressant sätt att utnyttja den teknik som nu blir allt vanligare i våra svenska hem - framförallt på grund av att vi skaffar dessa ljudsystem för att få en bioupplevelse när vi ser på DVD.
Personligen så tycker jag att det är lite "hit and miss" över det när det gäller musikskivor med 3D-ljud. Ibland så kan det faktiskt bidra till att skapa ett djup i musiken som definitivt tillför en extra dimension. Men om du använder det på fel sätt, så blir du som lyssnare mest stressad över att ljuden verkar komma slumpmässigt från olika högtalare.
Mythos är en enmansakt från Berlin. Bakom namnet döljer sig Stephen Kaske, en man som sedan han släppte sin första skiva 1971 har varit med att utveckla den tyska, elektroniska musikscenen. Surround Sound Offensive (S.O.S.) är en instrumentell skiva med 11 spår fantasifullt betitlade" S.O.S." nr 1-11. Låtarna tar avstamp i 70-talets instrumentella elektroniska musik, men har fått mer fräscha kläder och ljudbilden är uppblanda med element från såväl synthpop som modern electronica.
Tyvärr så måste jag säga att det här inte är något vidare. Låtarna är extremt intetsägande (till och med för att vara instrumentella) och ljuden är tråkiga. S.O.S. är vad jag nog närmast skulle beskriva som elektronisk hissmusik och inget jag går i gång på alls. Det berör mig liksom inte alls. Andra gången jag lyssnade igenom skivan så kändes det som om det var 11 nya låtar som jag hörde. Och det är inte ett gott betyg. Sett i ljuset av den här skivan så framstår Jarre och Vangelis närmast som vågade avant gard-musiker.
Jag skulle kunna tänka mig att skivan fungerar bra när du vill visa upp vad hemmabiosystemet kan göra, för implementeringen av Surround Sound-elementen är faktiskt helt ok. Men att lyssna på? Jag säger som Percy Nilegård: "- Icke!"

Nach etlichen Jahren Bühnenabstinenz meldet sich Stephan Kaske nun wieder
zurück!
Im Frühjahr 2009 begann Stephan Kaske mit dem Konzipieren ein neues
Live-Programms. Hartnäckige, intensives Bitten von Veranstaltern und Fans,
sowie die ein oder andere Auszeichnung für seine Musik in den letzten
Jahren, haben den Berliner Multi-Instrumentalisten dazu bewogen, endlich
mal wieder auf die Bühne zu kommen.
Fast zeitgleich mit seinem „Stage-Re-Birthing“ am 29. August in der Essener
Gruga erscheint auch das neue Album „Gallery Concerts“. (21. August bei
MellowJet Records).
Dieses Konzeptalbum spiegelt Stephan Kaskes Live-Programm wieder. Er hat
das Ganze direkt aus dem „Main-Mix“ eingespielt, nachdem Stephan die Musik
nonstop aufgenommen hat. - Ohne zentralen Computer - nur mit "bordeigenen"
Sequenzern und Arpeggiatoren, plus Querflöte, Vocoder und einigen weiteren
Instrumenten! Das es so etwas heute noch gibt -
Ick kieke, staune, wundre mir ...!
Back to the roots – denn in den „goldenen“ 70ern hatte Kaske als
Multiinstrumentalist so ziemlich alles an Tasten, Saiten, Klappen,
Stimmbändern und Reglern bewegt, was man sich nur vorstellen konnte.
Natürlich darf auch sein Markenzeichen – die bekannte "Tull"-Querflöte nicht
fehlen!
Und genau solche „antiken“, teilweise schrillen, aber immer melodiösen
Klanggebilde, die auch heute noch gern gehört werden, finden sich nun in
Mythos.. neuer Musik wieder.
In Track 4 „Mysticauroraborealis“ z.B., fühle ich mich in die Zeiten der
„Deutschen Wertarbeit“ versetzt, in denen Dorothea Raukes noch das
elektronische Zepter schwang. Überhaupt schafft es Stephan Kaske mich mit
seinen „Gallery Concerts“ in eine psychedelische Stimmung zu versetzen, was
natürlich gerade 40 Jahre nach Woodstock wieder en vogue ist! Dieser Titel
ist auch mein erklärtes Lieblingsstück der wirklich äußerst interessanten
Platte. Es ist zwar „nur“ 12:49 Minuten lang, scheint aber nie zu enden ...
Aber auch jedes der vier anderen Stücke ist etwas Besonderes. Stephan Kaske
schafft es, fünf ganz unterschiedliche Musiken auf seinem Album zu
platzieren. Sozusagen, eine ganz hervorragende Symbiose der verschiedensten
EM-Stile auf einer Scheibe gebündelt – Klasse!
Als extra-schmackhaftes Bonbon hat „Schlitzohr Stephan“ die gerade für die
jeweiligen Kompositionen benutzen Instrumente in seine Betitelungen
verklausuliert eingewoben. Nette Idee! Habe ich so auch noch nicht erlebt. -
Diese Titel reichen von „Analogdigitalpoliphomono“, „Filtergatemania“,
„Improviflutecho“ über das oben schon angesprochene „Mysticauroraborealis“
bis hin zu „Sequencetrumpetextasy“.
Schon allein daran kann man erkennen, dass Stephan das, was er da gerade
macht auch gern tut! Und diese positive Grundstimmung überträgt sich auch in
seine Musik. Sie schlängelt sich wie ein rot leuchtender Faden durch das
vielfältige Klanglabyrinth.
Diese gute Laune-Musik mach wirklich Lust auf Mehr!
Ich freue mich schon jetzt auf Mythos Live in der Gruga! Dort wird Stephan
uns dann hoffentlich mit vielen seiner legendären Instrumente überraschen.
Und alles soll ohne Laptop oder ähnliches über die Bühne gehen – da bin ich
schon sehr gespannt.
Aber die Hauptsache ist doch: Mythos lebt – und wie!

One listen to Berlin electronica group Mythos' "Surround Sound Offensive" will change the way you listen to music forever.
Mythos frontman Stephan Kaske has composed an incredible, artistic instrumental album that gives a new meaning to fullness of sound. Self-produced by Kaske in Dolby Pro Logic Surround Sound, "Surround Sound Offensive" constantly has a variety of sounds going in different places at the same time that artfully come together as a compositional whole.
These instrumentals, minimalistically labeled "S.S.O.-1" through "S.S.O.-11" are excellently crafted, well-layered, catchy, and unique. These songs are, by nature, best when listened to loudly on a surround sound system, and the album is meant to be listened to from beginning to end, as an artistic whole.
"S.S.O.-2" has an '80s feel to it with a great beat and a full sound that brings lots of different sounds together. "S.S.O.-8" has a lot of spacey ambience going, more great beats, and excellent instrumental layering with well-timed fades and dueling instrumentation.
"Surround Sound Offensive" is an electronica masterpiece filled with amazing, full instrumentation that fills the canvas with Kaske's artistic expression.
Fans of electronica, and anyone with a surround sound system are going to want to pick this one up.-

Die neue CD von Stephan Kaske aus Berlin ist soeben erschienen. Wir konnten uns von der hervorragenden Soundqualitaet des neuen Albums ueberzeugen.
Unter dem Titel "Surround Sound Offensive" veroeffentlicht er unter dem Projektnamen "Mythos" wieder einmal ein meisterhaftes Album.
Aber nicht nur der Surround-Sound begeistert; die Musik ist wie auf den Vorgaenger-Alben "Kamasutra", Edgar Allan Poe" und "Mysteria" sehr eingaengig und dynamisch.
Die Alben gehoeren fuer mich zu den besten der elektronischen Musik, wobei Stephan einen ganz eigenen Stil verfolgt.

Lively high end electronica in the German Berlin-school tradition. Full surround sound recording is used to establish a rich spatial arena with crystal clarity and dynamic acoustic effects. The Mythos sound is well suited to this approach - bright synthesiser themes and sequential patterns dance with luminous warmth, multi-layered, deftly crafted, melodic; airy effects swish and swirl throughout the soundscape; stirring programmed beats littered with variously manipulated hits, blips, splashes and zaps drive the music energetically forward. Kaske weaves the odd snatch of vocal ephemera into the mix - tribal chants or strongly effected speech, choral swells building the intensity to fever pitch. This latest Mythos album fills your headspace from end to end - demanding your attention - music on the offensive.
MOOD
The mood of Surround Sound Offensive is in keeping with the title - dramatic, stirring compositions full of energy and aural detail. The European heritage shines brightly - this is music of the machines bent toward their futurist potential - unashamedly synthetic whilst at the same time full of feeling and theatrical grandeur.
ARTWORK
Arriving in a slimline jewel case the artwork is uncomplicated and eye catching. A strong yellow sun-burst fronts the package. Sharp black lettering presenting the title and between the lines a pithy explanation of the intent of the album. Inside is a timed tracklist and German language discussion of the project in greater detail. For English speaking fans the insert opens out to reveal the relevant information in English.
OVERALL
This latest Mythos release is presented as the first in a new series of Mythos albums "offensively and consequently custom-made, matched and fine-tuned to YOUR wishes right from the start of the composition". In other words the artist Stephan Kaske is aiming to satisfy the desires of synth fans that are not content with mp3 quality sound or even common CD quality - Stephan explaining "the multiple psycoacoustic effects, binaural dummy head recordings and numerous surround elements appear and work best with the equipment adjusted to DOLBY PRO LOGIC (TM). We choose this format because the vast majority of fans have it available in their hi-fi systems, cars and home cinemas. It is also, of course, totally stereo compatible; many spacious events are already impressively effective in stereo". Eleven tracks in all make up this releases - the latest in an impressive Mythos discography that dates back into the early nineteen seventies!

Mythos is building on the colourful tradition of electronic music that the project has pioneered since the early days. MYTHOS wurde vom Multiinstrumentalisten Stephan Kaske mit Thomas Hildebrand und Harald Weiße 1969 gegründet.
Nach hunderten von Konzerten spielten sie 1971 auch extrem erfolgreich auf dem legendären "Langelsheim Festival", dem "Deutschen Woodstock", was zum ersten Plattenvertrag mit dem berühmten OHR-Label und 1972 zur Veröffentlichung der ersten LP MYTHOS führte.
Mit anderen Musikern nahm Kaske die MYTHOS-LPs DREAMLAB (1975), STRANGE GUYS (1978) und CONCRETE CITY (1979) auf.
1980 dann die erste Solo-LP bei SKY, die QUASAR, gefolgt von der GRAND PRIX (1981).
Ebenfalls 1981 gründete Kaske das MYTHOS STUDIO BERLIN (MSB), das wegen Kaskes Bekanntheitsgrad von Anfang an eine Art "Goldgrube" war. In den folgenden Jahren produzierte Kaske unzählige Bands und Projekte sowie Musik für TV, Radio, Film und Werbespots.
Erst 1989 veröffentlichte Kaske dann wieder reine MYTHOS-Musik, die MYTHOS LIVE und verursachte damit den wahrscheinlich folgenreichsten Vertragsabschluß in der MYTHOS-Geschichte.
Seit 1990 produziert Kaske nunmehr ununterbrochen für die heutige Firma MEMBRAN.
Aus der Zusammenarbeit sind nicht nur mehr als ein Dutzend weitere MYTHOS-CDs und Mehrfachalben entstanden, sondern auch zahlreiche Auftragsproduktionen durchaus anderer Stilrichtungen wie z.B. die Serien MYTHOS CLASSIC, PLUGGED ON oder M.A.S.S.
Aus dem Multiinstrumentalisten wurde zusätzlich der Multi-STILIST.
Kaskes Produktionen erhalten dabei traditionell nicht nur Bestkritiken aus dem In- und Ausland sondern auch Auszeichnungen.
So erhielt Kaske z.B. 2002 in Duisburg in großem Rahmen den "SCHWINGUNGEN EHRENPREIS" anläßlich der Veröffentlichung des Vierfach-Albums "The ELECTRONIC Four Seasons" und "für sein bisheriges Werk und den dauerhaften Einfluß auf die internationale Elektronik Musik".
2005 war die Doppel-CD "The Dramatic And Fantastic Stories Of EDGAR ALLEN POE" für das holländische Musik Magazin E-DITION die "CD des Jahres".
Ende 2006 veröffentlichte Kaske erstmals eine Produktion im SACD-Format (SuperAudioCD), das Dreifach Album MYSTERIA - An Electronic Journey Into Sound.
2008 macht das italienische Fachmagazin "NEW AGE and New Sounds" auf mit MYTHOS Story und Interview unter dem Titel "Il Cuore Elettronico di Berlino" (Das Elektronische Herz Berlins)

Wie der Titel schon sagt, eine CD speziell und extrem konsequent für die Freunde des Surround Sounds und des technisch/musikalischen HighEnds produziert.
Begeisterte Reaktionen von Fans und Medien aus dem In- und Ausland bereits im Vorfeld und nun nach der Veröffentlichung sind hier auf dieser Homepage nachzulesen
Noch vor Ende des Jahres 2008 veranlasst das grosse Interesse an den den Downloads der "MYTHOS LIVE in der Berliner Kongresshalle" das Label SYNGATE, die Aufnahme auch wieder in CD Form zu veröffentlichen (www.syngate.net)!
Im Frühjahr 2009 beginnt Kaske auf wiederholte intensive Anfragen von Veranstaltern und Fans ein neues Live-Programm zu konzipieren.
OHNE zentralen Computer - nur mit "bordeigenen" Sequenzern und Arpeggiatoren, PLUS QUERFLÖTE (erstmals wieder nach der 6.LP von 1981....), Vocoder und einigen weiteren Instrumenten und Effektgeräten!
Das dazugehörige Album erscheint im August 2009.
Das erste Konzert, die "Record Release Party", findet am 29.August Open Air beim Grillfest in der Essener GRUGA statt.

MYTHOS was founded in 1969 by the multiinstrumentalist Stephan Kaske with Thomas Hildebrand (Drums) and Harald Weiße (Bass).
1971 after several hundred concerts they performed extremely successful in the legendary "Langelsheim Festival" the "German Woodstock" and were signed by the famous OHR-Label. The first lp MYTHOS was published in 1972.
With other musicians Kaske recorded the MYTHOS-lps DREAMLAB (1975), STRANGE GUYS (1978) and CONCRETE CITY (1979).
In 1980 Kaske produced his first solo-lp for the SKY-Label, the QUASAR, followed by the GRAND PRIX (1981).
Also in 1981 Kaske founded the MYTHOS STUDIO BERLIN (MSB) which became a kind of "goldmine" right from the start because of MYTHOS' popularity.
In the following years Kaske produced countless bands and projects as well as music for TV, radio, film and commercials.
Not until 1989 he published pure MYTHOS music again, the MYTHOS LIVE. This led to the probably most important contract ever in the MYTHOS history.
Since 1990 up to the present day Kaske is producing for MEMBRAN.
From this cooperation resulted up to now more than a dozen MYTHOS single and multi cds and moreover numerous productions of other styles, i.e. the MYTHOS CLASSIC, PLUGGED ON or M.A.S.S. series.
Additionally to the multiinstrumentalist, Kaske became a multi-STYLIST.
Traditionally his productions are not only reviewed and recommended by critics from all over the world, but furthermore got awards and mentions.
2002 i.e., on the occasion of the 4cd album "The ELECTRONIC Four Seasons", Kaske was presented in front of a big audience with the SCHWINGUNGEN AWARD OF HONOUR for "his life's work up to date and his continuous influence on the international Electronic Music".
In 2005 the Dutch music magazine E-DITION has given the title "CD of the year" to the double cd "The Dramatic And Fantastic Stories Of EDGAR ALLEN POE".

Just before the end of 2008 the big interest in downloads of the "MYTHOS LIVE in the Berlin congress hall" initiated SYNGATE to relaunch the record in CD FORMAT (www.syngate.net)!
During spring 2009 Kaske responded to repeated requests of organizers and fans and created a conceptual design for a MYTHOS Live concert program.
WITHOUT pc or laptops, just using the "on-board" sequencers and arpeggiators, PLUS FLUTE (for the first time since the 6th lp "Grand Prix"), vocoder, electronic bagpipes and some more instruments and effects devices.
The appropriate album is going to be released in August 2009.
The first concert and record release party is taking place at 29th of August in Germany, Essen, GRUGA Open Air Barbecue.
