Fall Production
Carbon Black by Terry Gomez (Comanche)
November 7–22. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays: 8:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays: 2:00 p.m.
Gripping, suspenseful, and enigmatic, this psychological drama vividly portrays a mother/son relationship held hostage by agoraphobia and media-inspired fear.

Two Original Plays Mark The 10th Anniversary of Native Voices at the Autry by Broadway World
Native Voices at the Autry, America's leading Native American theater company - acclaimed by critics as "a hot bed for contemporary Native theater," "deeply compelling" and "a powerful and eloquent voice" - celebrates its 10th Anniversary by building on its storied and prolific history as the country's only Equity theater company dedicated exclusively to producing new works by Native American Playwrights and performed by Native actors.

Native Voices' production of Salvage Headed to London at Native American Times.com.
Native Voices at the Autry is taking its 2008 production of Diane Glancy’s Salvage to participate in Origins, the UK’s inaugural festival of First Nations Creative Art. Native Voices is the only U.S. theater company selected to participate along with three others from around the world.

Variety review of Salvage by Julio Martinez
In a tour de force portrayal, Greygrass-Owens' Wolfert appears imbued with the sorrow of a lifetime of loss, including his wife and four other children. He projects a deep-seated inner strength that relegates his son and daughter-in-law to the level of callow seekers of truth

'Salvage' at the Autry by F. Kathleen Foley, Los Angeles Times
The setting is a Montana reservation, but the escalating cycle of violence and retribution is as Greek as it is tribal. Passages of delicate poeticism are interspersed with scenes of striking terror.

電影The Reviews are In for Wings of Night Sky, Wings of Morning Light by Joy Harjo

Native Voices at the Autry proudly presents the world premiere of Wings of Night Sky, Wings of Morning Light by musician, poet, songwriter, and playwright Joy Harjo (Mvskoke). The play is a deeply compelling journey of struggle, displacement, self-discovery, and healing. Invoking spoken word, storytelling, music, and song, Harjo takes us on a wild theatrical ride where she tells it like it is with spirit and a mean jazz sax. An allegorical work of tremendous power, Wings demonstrates how theater and art can bring life full circle.

Harjo takes her audience on a journey that begins and ends with healing. If the essence of ceremony can be put on stage, she has done it. --Corina Roberts, Founder, Redbird

Native American poet and musician Joy Harjo is a woman who communes with spirits, and in this music-embellished piece, she opines about struggle, survival and transcendence in a powerful and eloquent voice.--Deborah Klugman, LA Weekly

Her painful journey from a traumatic childhood to serenity and acceptance is well-charted, an inspirational odyssey that makes “Wings” take flight.--F. Kathleen Foley, Los Angeles Times

About Native Voices at the Autry

....

Native Voices at the Autry is devoted to developing and producing new works for the stage by Native American playwrights. It was established in 1999 to provide a supportive and collaborative setting for Native American playwrights and actors from across the U.S. and Canada to both develop their work and see it fully realized. Since 1999, Native Voices has produced Urban Tattoo, Jump Kiss, The Buz'Gem Blues, Please Do Not Touch the Indians, Kino & Teresa, Stone Heart, The Red Road, The Berlin Blues, and SUPER INDIAN. In addition, Native Voices has held 57 workshops and 47 public staged readings of new plays by Native American playwrights featuring Native American actors.

Through its Young Native Voices: Theater Education Project, Native Voices has provided workshops and residencies resulting in 45 staged readings of 10-minute plays and two full productions of traditional Kumeyaay stories featuring more than forty students from the Sycuan Learning Center.

Native Voices at the Autry is a Constituent of Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for the American theater, and an Organizational Member of LA Stage Alliance, Los Angeles’s nonprofit organization dedicated to building awareness, appreciation, and support for the performing arts...

The Autry National Center in Los Angeles, California, is home to Native Voices and every year hosts the many playwrights who come to develop their work for the stage.

Young Native Voices: Theater Education Project
DeLanna Studi and Thirza Defoe..

For the past five years, Young Native Voices: Theater Education Project has provided workshops and residencies for Native American youths at the Southern California Indian Center and the American Indian Clubhouse. Playwrights are paired with professional mentors for an intensive playwriting or theater workshop culminating in public staged readings of their plays. To date, forty-five new plays have been written as part of the project.

In 2005, Young Native Voices expanded to include reservation outreach. That year, Native Voices theater artists and mentors were in residence at the Coeur d’Alene Schitsu’umsh Reservation in Idaho, working with students to create and perform ten 10-minute plays at six different venues, including the University of Idaho, the Coeur d’Alene Reservation, North Idaho College, and the Museum of Arts and Culture. In 2006, they were in residence for a month at the Sycuan Reservation in San Diego County, where they worked with thirty-seven students from the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. Students participated in daily theater workshops and created a full production of three traditional Kumeyaay stories featuring Kumeyaay language, song, and dance.

Coeur d'Alene..

On November 11, 2005, Native American Stewardship Council (NASC) member Jeanne Givens sat down to talk about the students' experiences at Coeur d'Alene. To read the full transcript of that conversation click here.

Playwrights' Retreat
Playwrights' Retreat..
Each year five established and emerging Native American playwrights are selected for a weeklong new-play development process. Playwrights attend a number of workshops and are mentored by Los Angeles-based theater professionals.
