New Loft is a pretty much all-improv "free" "jazz" trio "playing an aggressive blend of improvised music with a 20 year history of troubled and adventurous aesthetics." We started existing in 1996, in Richmond, VA. Past histories: Tim and Sam played together in the Richmond-based collective Tad Thaddock in the early '80s, and later in the short-lived Office Ladies. Sam moved to Boston and played in UYA. Tim played in Always August. Tim and Jimmy were founding members of Hotel X, which still exists. Jimmy and Sam worked as a duo for a while before bringing Tim in. Then we added trumpeter Jon Mela (also ex-Tad, Office Ladies, Always August) to become New Loft Quartet. Jon died in early 2005. Jimmy and Tim play sometimes with the Four-Story Sax Quartet. Tim works extensively with Hotel X. Jimmy plays and records all over the place. We've also all played in the Joyful Noise Big Band.
There could be much more detail here, I'm sure. What kind of music do we play? It depends. Abstract, expressionistic, "out," noisy, clunky, non-composed, fluid, other words. Right now we have settled on half-hour excursions. Half an hour seems to be a nice time for us to say what we have to say at that time. We play once a week, used to be in Jimmy's basement, now in Tim's house. We record it all. Sometimes we have guests.
We have put up several full-length improvs available for free download as lossless flac, mp3 or streaming audio at: http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=mediatype%3Aaudio%20AND%20subject%3A%22New%20Loft%22

Lofties! Hi, how are you? Yesterday I added a solo "live" recording of me
performing a great from the Bacharach/David songbook, "(Do You Know the
Way to) San Jose?". Me and an acoustic guitar and few bum notes. Have a
listen.
Lofties! Please have a listen to my new song, “Consideration” in the mighty MySpace player. It features me and that perfect percussive palooka, Anthony Allen of Washington, D.C. Not a real mix, but pretty much finished. It will appear on my next album, Smellicopter, in 2010/2011. Please “subscribe” to me if you haven’t already. You need to be in the loop, right?
Drop whatever you are doing and listen to my new song in the MySpace player.
Yet more “live” radio appearance gold from the Pure Pop show back in May 2008.
I recorded a “live” version of one of my most beloved songs, “Karen,” an important part of my 1999 cd, For Those Who like POP (available everywhere now as a download album, or I can scare up an original rare compact disc for you online somewhere). This version is a special scaled down arrangement which deletes an instrumental section that is impossible to play on guitar.
Once again, just me and an acoustic guitar. Please listen and let me hear from you. Scott Brookman
PS: “subscribe” to me, if you haven’t already, so you’ll know what is going on!
Drop whatever you are doing and listen to my new song in the MySpace player. I recorded a “live” version of Donovan’s song “Museum” back in May. It was part of my appearance on Alan Haber’s Pure Pop radio show.
It is downloadable, so if you want a copy go ahead. This will be for a limited time only then it will be taken down.
Have an unbelievable holiday season…. Scott Brookman

Hey Jim you crazy cool jazz cat! You know my son Ian plays alto sax. He has a Jupter brand sax I bought threw the school. Does it have the same range as yours? It is a beginer sax. Is their a difference? Your friend Johnny Guitar
A big thanks to all my friends... I just went over 10,000 listens on my player. I've added a fifth tune to my player, an arrangement of Scott Henderson's "Harpoon", the leader and guitar player of Tribal Tech.
