After an extensive career in the music business in the 90s and fame as singer-songwriter of seminal rock outfit, The Padres, Joe has found a niche as one of “Singapore’s foremost film and television music composer” (www.sinema.sg/2008/03/22/joe-ng-on-scoring-for-rule-1/).
A prominent player of Singapore’s independent music scene, promoter of alternative rock shows and producer of bands, the local music’s boy has been the sole music head and working partner of Kelvin Tong. He has the distinction of scoring – but is not limited to – all of his films, including the award-winning film, Eating Air (1999), box-office horror hit The Maid (2005) and most recently, the well-received Rule Number One (2008).
In 2004, Joe was nominated for the Asian Television Award for Best Original Music Score for The Frontline (2003) while his work with long-time collaborator Alex Oh on the art-house flick, Love Story (2006), eventually won Best Director prize for Kelvin Tong at the 2006 Singapore International Film Festival.
Joe’s work is firstly in service to the script: “I believe the music is already in the film from script stage and it is up to me to extract and actualise it”.
His latest is audio mixing and composing for the winner of this year’s Singapore International Film Festival Short Film Competition winner “Swimming Lesson” directed by Kat Goh, who also won Best Director. He also moonlights as a DJ at Beat!, a popular weekly indie night at Homeclub.
