If Nic Bennett were not a prolific songwriter, he would be the loudest regular at the local bar – lamenting the forces aligned against him and cracking a bottle over the head of anyone who told him to keep it to himself. Luckily, Bennett has been writing songs for this record, and they always turn out better when he really has something to complain about. After a few bad break ups and phases of heavy drinking, Bennett has recorded part 1 of his debut album, with a sound as diverse as its creator’s changing moods.

“This Is 6th Form Poetry (Not Keats Or Yates) Part1.” highlight “ Italy ” is sandwidged in between full band versions of the gorgeous, teetering “Say Something” and the upbeat but bitter “Tears and Memories.” The e.p. is as much a love letter to idols like Ryan Adams and Damien Rice as to any faded flame.

Slow-burning acoustic gem “Come Back Down Again” capture Bennett’s sense of love betrayed with a few barely strummed chords and half-muttered phrases.

The close of the CD sees the looser, more heartfelt “Is It Like This Every Time?” - a brutally honest chronicle of the highs and lows of love.

Heartbreak and hard drink have inspired many great records, but rarely one as tender as this.
