Sept '09 Hello and welcome to my MySpace page
I'm primarily known as a bass-player which is how I've earned the bulk of my living for the past 15 years. Over this period, I have worked alongside a varied range of artists, involving different musical styles in many settings (see 'Influences' section).
I'm also into projects and writing: I have a long-term association with guitarist Tony Rémy and have consistently featured on recordings on his label (Alltone Records and the newly launched 'Tonic') and in his live bands. I was involved in a label project with another partner and, for 6 years, successfully ran a small independent, ‘Smugg Records', releasing a small but impressive catalogue of singles and albums across Europe. I was a founder member of the electronica improvisation group The Bays of which I was a part for 3 years.
As an active writer, I have always tried to develop my writing alongside my playing: I have written for a small dance company and for independent films. I have co-written tracks with singer/songwriters and have done a handful of commissioned work for advertising, corporate and the like.
This is what has been happening recently and projects I'm working on at the moment:
- Japanese artist M-Swift will have a European release of his "Evening Sun" album coming out soon (I played bass on and co-produced this record). His "24 Carat Black" album, on which I also recorded 8 tracks, is out now and tour dates are being finalised now for next year.
- The collaboration with Japanese DJ, Kay Nakayama, and legendary Casiopea drummer, Akira Jimbo, is nearly finished. It is currently being mixed in Tokyo.
- I have been doing a lot more programming work this year, creating backing sequences for artists such as Anastacia and Tom Jones for use in their live shows.
- Joey Negro's Sunburst Band continues to go from strength to strength. In this band, I'm not playing bass. I'm controlling the sequencer and playing interactively using Ableton Live. It's been a busy summer, notably with shows at the Garden Festival in Croatia and 2 great shows at London's Ronnie Scott's. The gig schedule is constantly updating and we have upcoming shows in Manchester, London, Dubai, Bulgaria...
- Matt Bianco have also had a busy year so far. We have been promoting the new album (Hi Fi Bossa Nova) in the far east (including a week playing Japan's Billboard clubs) and all over Europe. Next we go to Eastern Europe including Georgia and Poland plus a one off trip to Lebanon.
- In Dec 2006, I put together L!STEN . It is aimed at bringing together musicians and helping us to help ourselves. Please take the time to check this out if you can. This is important; please get involved. Everyone is welcome and we believe that together we make a difference. Also, if you'd like to get involved, or have some ideas, please drop me line. (There are some problems with the site at the moment but should be sorted soon)
I also write and produce library music and teach on a degree course at University of Westminster.
I am an endorser of Mark Bass bass amplification equipment and Galli guitar strings.
All the best,
Nick
