probably the food fisherman tom comes to shore/porch/party with has a lot to do with it- eat a fucking crab or two and have a bit of venison backstrap just out of the woodstove on a warm plate with some of guerilla growing's salad greens and you've got positive energy exchange goin on, that's what music is, too, right? also the poems my sister maymay writes are really awesome, especially while watching the woodpeckers and goldfinches at my dad's birdfeeder with a little smoke in hand and some tea steaming and leaving rings on ms. oskan's starchy manuscripts (sorry may, i'm such a mess) marciana in the upstairs room singing to herself, lying on her back beneath a guitar "you're in Loooooooove!!!" Big Lizzie the rockinest lady in maine, possibly the world, my brother the dragon-slayer(that's right, and he got the princess, too, and that amazing baby girl that passes the wrenches under the pickup truck)all the kind folks I catch up with when I'm kickin around a place that give me stories and directions and silver hippos in 3 sizes, the beauty of the gossamer web, a certain thread being tied to that lovely man's little finger and to mine as well so across the world I can give a tug and get one back, guerilla growing as a philosophy, a dinner party at the barn with my favorite ladies and some good whisky, the way it all works out in the end (at the end of the day, it's all alright, like that scottsman said on the train)and I know there's more but I'm hungry and in belgium so I'll have to do something about that...

I found a northern flicker dead in a wood stove I was moving recently. The flicker is a large type of woodpecker with brilliant yellow and black underwings, a spotted chest, and a red spot on the back of its head. It was very beautiful. There were holes in the stovepipe where it had tried to escape; we buried it in the garden before continuing our tasks.
I remember as a small child opening the door on the outside of a chimney on my way home from school. A chickadee flew out, its flapping wings grazing my face in its hurry to be free. I opened the chimney door each time I passed after that, and often a bird came rushing out.
I'm going to put a grate up over the chimney to prevent more birds from being trapped. I thought I'd share these stories in hopes of inspiring others to do the same.
