Ninon Foiret is the only professional bandoneonist based in the UK. In the past 12 months she has toured extensively as a stage musician for the theatre company Travelling Light, appeared in Flamenco Flamen’ka at the Lyric,
and performed with the Ballet Boyz in Craig Revel Horwood acclaimed choreography La Yumba vs Adios Nonino at the Royal Festival Hall, Covent Garden, Queen Elisabeth Hall, Sadler’s Wells and Buckingham Palace alongside the London Philharmonia. Ninon has recorded for BBC Radio 3’s Discovering Music a program on tango and performed solo with the BBC Concert Orchestra (to be broadcast again on 23rd November), and she recently performed the Piazzolla’s 4 seasons with Covent Garden’s concert master Vasko Vassiliev.
She has been leading her own tango ensemble, Fueye Tango, since 2006 and works also as a composer while still being in great demand as an accomplished flute player.
After studying classical music as a flautist and sound engineering at the Ecole Louis Lumière in Paris, Ninon started playing Afro jazz funk with Rido Bayonne Big Band, performing alongside Paco Séry and Etienne M’Bappé, appearing at Montreux Jazz Festival, Tabarka Jazz Festival, the New Morning among others and touring Cameroon and the Congo.
She later moved to England to complete a master in Jazz Performance at Leeds College of Music. Ninon is a member of LIMA and its orchestra, and performed with Ken Vandermark for a concert broadcast on BBC Radio 3 during the FuseLeeds Festival. She also plays with several jazz bands in and around Leeds.
Ninon has recently toured nationally with tabla player Manveer Singh on his Indian jazz fusion project “Marva, my journey”.
She still appears regularly in Paris in various jazz formations, as well as performs for contemporary music and tango.
She has been studying the bandoneon in Paris for the past 10 years with Juan Jose Mosalini, one of the few masters of the instrument. Ninon has also worked with Dino Saluzzi developing her technique of improvisation on the instrument and extending her knowledge of traditional Argentinian music. Her recent journey to Buenos Aires where she met and worked with many Argentinian musicians has confirmed her desire to share her passion for this most exhilarating musical experience.
ARGENTINIAN LANDSCAPE PROJECT, her latest endeavour, was conceived during this journey.
Ninon also works as a stage musician and composer, she was on placement for a year at West Yorkshire Playhouse and is the Musical Director of Theatre of the Dales. In 2004 she devised her own solo piece “Perles secrètes…”, a blend of theatre, storytelling and music, which she performed in France. She also tour
ed with the National Trust Theatre Company in their show “As far as I can sea” under the musical direction of Kneehigh Theatre Stu Barker.
Ninon also works on films projects as a composer and soundscape designer.
“… the real stars are Stu Barker’s music and Ninon Foiret’s performance of it. The watery score is deeply atmospheric and Foiret is an adept musician, moving among a range of instruments including hurdy-gurdy, flute, pipe, concertina and percussion. Her voice is extraordinary too. It will be a long time before I forget the haunting anguish of her distressed dolphin cries.” (The Stage)

Hi Ninon - I know you won't be around for this, but maybe you'd like the picture! I hope your last month has been relaxing/invigorating/whatever was needed.
Do you know whether your National Theatre gig is happening on Friday 24th October or not? I have a gig in the LIMA festival with this band and obviously I need to know whether Rus will be available for it or not.
