NO CONNECTION - Second to None 7" EP
7 song 7" EP, recorded April '08 with Greg Pier at Neon Witch Studios in Syracuse. $5.50 ppd
Review from Razorcake online:
The cover of this slab is pretty neat. It has a drawing of the four members of the band running (or maybe circle pitting?) in the background and a stressed-out nun in the foreground, who is clenching her fist and teeth. Maybe they’re about to bum rush the nun from behind. I’m not quite sure. Anyhow, it looks like some fun hardcore punk. Upon pulling this from the bin, I was informed (by Daryl) that the I Object vocalist sings for this band. I haven’t listened to too much I Object, but, from what I have heard, No Connection is pretty different. NC is female-fronted melodic pop punk without being overly melodic or too pop. A Discount comparison seems unavoidable, but Barb (NC’s vocalist) is a bit harder sounding than Allison Mosshart (formerly of Discount). The insert includes brief explanations of the songs, which is kinda all right. The lyrics are good, dealing with various topics such as the metaphysics of love, the sex industry, stem cell research, and four other subjects. All things considered, this is a great seven-song EP. Just turn it up because it’s mastered kinda low, and, well, you should listen to this loudly anyhow.
Review from the February '09 issue of Tarnished Words Blog:
I've always been a sucker for pop punk bands who are melodic without being weepy or melodramatic. Add a touch of politics and you've got the recipe for something great. That formula was the backbone of bands like Fifteen, Discount, Crimpshrine, Spoke, etc. No Connection are very much in the same vein. This is Barb from I Object's new band, and she handles the vocals on here admirably. "Stemmie" is the fantastic and infectious opener about the need for expanding stem cell research. "Remind Me" is an irrestibly catchy tune that reminds us to look at things from the glass-half-full perspective. The closer, "Sexwerk" is another gem that examines fallacies in discussions about the sex industry. I like this alot. There are hooks galore on here, and it's the perfect change of pace from the slew of throwback hardcore records coming out these days.
Review from HEX Zine online:
I'm checking this out in demo form, though I understand this will soon be released as a 7" as well. Either way, it's the second batch of songs this Syracuse pop-punk (in the true sense of the term) band has recorded. They re-emerge with a new guitarist, though not much else has changed. The sound remains rooted in that East Bay, early 90's pop-punk/hardcore style- short, fast, catchy, and sung vocals by the girl whose name adorns the clever Decendents rip-off cover. Nice. Seven new ones with a somewhat better recording and just a slightly crunchier guitar sound than before.
Review from the October '08 issue of Maximum Rock'n'Roll:
The cover is a parody of Milo Goes to College, through they don’t really sound like THE DESCENDENTS at all… more similar to Discount-- yeah, female singer-- but she has a nice voice. Most are mid-tempo rockers and I’m thinking there’s an element of J CHURCH here, which makes a load of sense considering the previous reference. I like this demo… makes me want to light some candles, stare out the window while it rains, and curl up on the couch with a pint of Chunky Monkey. Friday night in the bag.

Review from the August '07 issue of Maximum Rock'n'Roll:
"Syracuse, NY’s NO CONNECTION plays catchy pop-punk with female vocals. I hate making the gender reference but you kind of have to most of the time to describe what something sounds like I guess. They cover DISCOUNT’s 'Half Fiction' and that is a perfect reference point. Call it a lazy review if you want but this really does sound like DISCOUNT."
Review from the 9/24/07 edition of HEX Zine online:
"I think if you make a demo, and it’s 8 songs long you’re probably onto something either awful or awesome. There is no middle ground. See, if they’re rather long songs than your band is probably overly-pretentious and self-indulgent to the point of hari kari-inducing boredom. If they’re short songs than I probably like it. Short is good. Just check out my height sometime and see for yourself. Regardless, on the initial offering from Syracuse’s No Connection they offer up 8 (hey, there was a reason I mentioned that earlier!) quick (yes, good) blasts of pop-punk goodness. And let it be known that the recent rash of pop-punk bands sprouting up seem to be taking their influences primarily from early-to-mid 90’s East Bay styles and doing it damn well. Let the mall pop-punk be decimated under the weight of one million Jawbreaker records! Surround the castle of Discount with spikes bearing the severed heads of New Found Glory and all their clones! OK, enough of that, onto the music. Right then. Well, think Discount. Yup. Shit, they even do a Discount cover. Vocalist Barb Yuhas (presently fronting I Object) trades her rebel yell for some happy-go-lucky singing, but keeps the politics fresh. It’s punk, it’s catchy, but it still sounds nice and raw. Gimme more."
Review from Razorcake online:
"Barb from I Object has a new pop punk band. In that band, I think she sounds a lot like Taina from Antiproduct, but not in this one—vocally and musically, this is straight up pop punk worship. They do a cover of Discount’s “Half Fiction” that sounds so eerily like the original it could’ve been an outtake from the same recording session. I got 49/50, but I’m sure they’ve still got CD-R versions available."
