12:45 am. The beautiful terrace of the Cultural Center of Spain Mexico DF has been filling up slowly but surely. A couple of hundred people dancing in peace, enjoying a set of minimal techno without :exabruptos. The DJ knows what is coming. Nobody else knows. Normal & Moodo. The screen lights, video streaming and an enigmatic space sound mixed with a sample that greeted the audience: Ladies and gentlemen, from Colombia, the Sonora ... Hardly anyone has noticed (or notice) that a flag of Colombia has been placed on the balcony to accompany the band throughout the concert. When Normal & Moodo decided to translate their dreams into tracks, never thought of making music that referred to their national origin or any other nationality. When they started talking about this project in Seattle, back in 1998, his main inspiration was the space. Or what we understand from the earthlings. It is Karen Ruiz, owner of a fragile and enigmatic voice, barely audible, yet powerful. Karen may be part of a Standard & Moodo or queen of karaoke. We do not know and they do nothing to tell. Sings two songs delicious as it is. Valencia trigers samples from the PowerBook, Rettally remains impeccable on the bass and Diago takes the microphone. Repeat the phrase about thirty times YO QUIERO MAS some fierce beats explode from the speakers. Loud applause. Now comes a song until now known only by the people through the disc Noiselab, It's Just Good Baby Frequencies, and the audience erupts. The rocket is in space flying safe. At the end a final version of We come from the stars and a ballad that leaves us with the taste of familiar pop in the ears. But Normal & Moodo is bittersweet pop. Diago sings an abstract point of indifference as the atmosphere in which we float nearly hour and a quarter. Everything ends in a placid landing. N&M already exists as a band, and leaves the impression. Thanks for coming, they say. Thanks for inviting us, is what we say.

ALUNIZANDO ( Y ALUCINANDO)

Son las 12:45 am. La hermosa terraza del Centro Cultural de España se ha venido llenando sin prisa pero sin pausa. Un par de cientos de personas bailan en paz, saboreando los beats de un set de minimal techno sin exabruptos. El dj sabe lo que esta por venir. Nadie mas lo sabe. Normal y Moodo (Normal & Mudo). De ellos se conoce un track que Noiselab incluyó en Playlist y luego la publicacion de todo su disco bajo el mismo sello. Entre la multitud, tres personajes se abren paso y ocupan sus lugares frente a los instrumentos. Hay una guitarra, un bajo, unos teclados y un powerbook esperando. La pantalla se enciende, los vídeos fluyen y un enigmático sonido espacial se mezcla con un sample que saluda a la audiencia: Señoras y señores desde Colombia la Sonora... Casi nadie ha notado (ni notara) que una bandera de Colombia ha sido puesta en el balcón y acompañara a estos músicos emigrantes durante todo el concierto. Cuando Normal & Moodo decidieron traducir sus sueños en tracks, nunca pensaron en hacer música que remitiera a su origen nacional ni a ninguna otra nacionalidad. Cuando empezaron a hablar de este proyecto, en Seattle, alla por el año 1998, su principal inspiración era el espacio. O lo que entendemos los terrícolas de el. Es lo que empieza a sonar una vez que el sample se desvanece, los pads crecen junto con la tensión del sonido y el público se deslumbra, o se desconcierta, o ambas cosas. Ya es la una de la mañana y un robot virtual se presenta: we come from the stars. Normal & Moodo esta formado esencialmente por Felipe Valencia y Luis Diago , bogotanos, multiinstrumentistas e ingenieros de audio con estudios formales hechos en la mencionada Seattle. Se nota. La claridad timbrica y la fuerza de sus primeros beats revelan un conocimiento solvente de la física del sonido. Diago agarra la guitarra y la fiesta arranca. Los pies se empiezan a mover. Es música electrónica? Es rock? No importa. Es música. Muy buena música, desde el principio. Nacho Rettaly, mexicano, hace figuras atmosféricas en el teclado. Normal & Moodo plantea su propuesta desde la primera canción, que flota por unos ocho minutos y envuelve a la desprevenida concurrencia. Al terminar la primera canción, el público ya esta semihipnotizado. Rettaly toma el bajo, el tempo sube y los vídeos mutan. De alla en adelante nos encontraremos con una hora inclasificable, llena de música que no acepta encasillamientos. Esta banda tiene muy claro el tiempo en que vivimos, esta postmodernidad musical que sabemos dónde empezó pero no sabemos donde terminar. Se trata de canciones normales en su estructura, con partes definidas y matices dinámicos, moods. Moodos. Beben del rock, del pop, del ambient. Su espíritu no es jovial ni complaciente. Es mas bien oscuro, en el mejor sentido de la palabra. No hay solos ni alardes de virtuosismo. Creen en el poder del sonido abstracto soportado por bases rítmicas sólidas y bailables. Si también, si estas de animo. Pero también puedes quedarte embelesado con lo que oyes y lo que ves. La noche es libre. De pronto, una chica de zapatos rojos camina entre el público, llega al frente del escenario y toma un micrófono con el desparpajo de quien no ha sido invitado pero es bienvenido. Es Karen Ruiz, dueña de una voz frágil y enigmática, apenas audible y sin embargo potente. Karen podrá ser la nueva integrante de Normal & Moodo o una reina del karaoke. No lo sabemos y ellos no hacen nada por informarnos. Canta dos deliciosas canciones y se va como llegó. Valencia encadena las canciones desde el powerbook, Rettally sigue impecable en el bajo y Diago retoma el micrófono. Repite unas treinta veces la frase yo quiero mas sobre unos beats feroces, pasando por todas las tesituras, desde el susurro grave hasta el alarido caprichoso. Grandes aplausos. Llega la única canción hasta ahora conocida por la gente gracias al disco de Noiselab, It's Just Good Frequencies Baby, y el público estalla. El cohete ya vuela en espacio seguro. Llega el final con otra versión de We come from the stars y una balada que nos deja con el sabor familiar del pop en los oídos. Pero en Normal & Moodo el pop es agridulce. Diago canta una letra de desamor tan abstracta como las atmósferas en las que hemos flotado por casi hora y cuarto. Todo termina en un plácido alunizaje. Normal & Moodo ya existe como banda, y la impresión que deja es definitiva. Gracias por venir, es lo único que nos dicen. Gracias por invitarnos, decimos nosotros.
