Kreg Sterns and Kim Collister- childhood pals from Nyack, New York- had their first band in the early 90s. The quartet known as Aenone with bassist Bill Stair and drummer Steve Crowley released just one critically acclaimed EP for Kokopop in 1993. Saints & Razors was an excellent EP melding shoegazer guitar work with gentle vocals and a solid rhythm section. The band was short-lived though.
A year on and Sterns, Collister and Bill Stair headed to London as three-fourths of Nyack, now signed to new indie label Echo. Their first release was to be the 1994 Savage Smile EP that included a live cover of Blondie's Dreamin'. Just prior to the release of their second EP I'm Your Star in March 1995 they landed the prestigious support of Sleeper's tour to coincide with the single. The album 11 Track Player followed a few months later that sports a red and green variation on the cover of Zipgun's 1992 album, 8 Track Player. The CD album also features a Nyack interactive scrapbook with lots of interesting videos. The album was released with just average success. The last release Nyack featured on was the Echo Records sampler Drink Me for which they recorded a cover of Hearts Barracuda. After that the Nyack name was to be no more as Echo found Nyack to be too expensive and the band took a break from playing.
The group resurfaced in 1997 as Fork and released an album 'Alien Fairies'.
Kreg Sterns and Kim Collisters current project is The Nuevos (formed in 2003) and they will be releasing their debut album On The Brink Of Overnight Obscurity in September. Also I hear there will be an Aenone revival with an album to be released in the future+
This is what Kreg said himself:
How did the band form in the first place and how did you get signed by Echo?
''Kim and I started Aenone in the early 90s. We were influenced heavily by the UK shoegaze scene. We put out ads in the Village Voice looking for band members and found our drummer and bassit that way. We had quite a buzz going in NYC with our single/EP on Brooklyn's Kokopop called "Saints & Razors". Our lawyer, Loren Chodosh (The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, TV On The Radio, Nada Surf, etc.) also represented Steve Fererra, one of the top 10 session drummers in the world (Suzanne Vega, Shakespeares Sister) who had a new gig as head of A&R at the new Chrysalis off-shoot Echo. He loved us and flew over to NY to see us showcase at CBGBs. We were signed shortly after and went to London with our Bassist Bill, but no drummer since our original drummer had left to pursue other projects and we were playing with a fill in guy. Being that Steve was an amazing drummer, he played on all of the recordings. They made us change the name of the band and since I had grown up in Nyack, NY, we named the band after my hometown.''
What caused the band to split?
''We spent too much money basically. The label couldnt afford to keep us on any longer. We were the most expensive band on the label at that point. Plus the set of demos for the 2nd album were drastically different from the first and they weren't sure how to market it. I was disappointed as I loved living in England. Everything happens for a reason I guess. The other members of Nyack who played with us live went their own ways. If I could play drums, I'd be much happier being a solo artist. I am recording a new Aenone album more along the lines of Nyack, but with a more indie sensibility. Wish me luck''

Nyack - Savage Smile (Melody Maker: 17th September 1994)
They're a New York band now relocated in Blighty, they're described as the most English of American bands, and "Savage Smile" is a vastly superior slice of barbed dreampop, like Ride with bite instead of insipid vacuity or even- picture this- Oasis trying to do the Beach Boys. They play three excellent, dippily vicious tracks of their own plus a blissfully faithful, slightly cheesy version of Blondie's "Dreamin'", and sitting all on my own at 3am on my 32nd birthday they lift me to some joyous, unexpected approximation of High Heaven. Nice one, boys. By Ian Gittins
Nyack- Savage Smile (NME: 17th September 1994)
Shoegazing belatedly hits America. You know the score; weak, distant male vocal, sounds like he's just got out of bed and is going straight back there, My Bloody Valentine wannabe guitar, nice tunes and a hint of feedback. This New York quartet are the perfect band for people nostalgic about the recent past. Put this on and you could be at a Chapterhouse and Slowdive double bill in 1991, maybe with Moose on the PA. Nyack - I'm Your Star (becomingadot.com)
Power-pop, dream-pop, and noise-pop go head-to-head-to-head in a three-way battle where the listener is the big winner. Nyack were once as US band called Aenone. Now theyre called Fork. Somewhere in the middle of this they were a UK band called Nyack, and they released an album and a couple of Eps of quality Teenage Fanclub and Posies-influenced pop. I'm Your Star is an irresistible mix of king-size hooks, sweet vocal harmonies and appealing guitar fuzz. One spin should be more than enough to lock it into the brains control room for good. Mean Streak is a moody acoustic based number that momentarily sheds its pensive skin for an uplifting and melodic (but over-too-fast) chorus that packs a whale sized hook. Next on offer is Nyacks fairly faithful cover of the Eurythmics track, Love Is A Stranger, which is quite nice, employing an added bit of grit and a throbbing, echo-y feel that favourably recalls Lunas Pup Tent. Ultimately though, its a by-the-numbers cover and therefore, a little unspectacular. Closing track, Dreamland, is a shimmering, space-y, vaguely Forbidden Colours-y instrumental that makes every second of its 3.15 a very soothing and pleasant experience. Fairly obscure product, but well worth the effort to find. (4 / 5) By Dean O
