   About Open Music Ensemble

The Open Music Ensemble is an expanding cooperative of versatile, professional music improvisers, a pioneer in the development and performance of "Open Music", and an associate of the Open Music Circle (www.myspace.com/openmusiccircle).

PHILOSOPHY:

The Open Music Ensemble creates and performs acoustic, improvised, unpredictable yet organic music which is often meditative and healing. The Ensemble musicians allow the music they create to come through them rather than try to create the music they play. The notes, rhythms, and sounds in an Ensemble performance are intuitively created by the Ensemble members during the performance as they listen to each other and permit themselves to respond spontaneously to what they hear. By listening and standing out of the way, the Ensemble's sounds and rhythms move to a deeper level and offer the audience a more profound musical experience.

This aproach to the creation of music was articulated by the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Charles Wuorinen when he stated at the Guggenheim Museum in 2008 that he does not create music, but rather lets it pass through him. And the bassist William Parker further explained in 2007:"The concept is spontaneoous creation using sound, silences, rhythm, melody and harmony. Each musician is a vessel through which divine messages are passed on from the creator to the world at hand".

An Open Music Ensemble performance may also be somewhat structured in advance for a specific occasion or location. When performing for a celebration of Losar, the Tibetan New Year, for example, the Ensemble created and performed a piece inspired by three Tibetan melodies recorded in 1921 on the first Mount Everest expedition. And at Bowery Poetry Club we created and performed an improvised a thre-part composition based on pieces connected with the musical history of the Bowery (for details see below under Prior Performances).

The Ensemble occasionally offers its members the opportunity to create a composition for the Ensemble to perform; this has resulted in two innovative new works: Tom Zlabinger's "Liberated Harmony", a musical deconstruction of Western harmonic patterns, and Dawoud Kringle's "Free Blues", a raga-based sequence with Blues phrasing and rhythm.

The Open Music Ensemble offers five programs, each of which can be compared to a different finger on the same hand: each program has its own shape and function, but each extends from, and is connected to the others by a common palm - the Ensemble's Open Music philosophy.

Photobucket

FIVE PROGRAMS:

1. Open Improv (Manuela Le chler, Organizer): Members of the Ensemble create and present free-form music similiar to Free-style Jazz. The music is unpredictable, spontaneous, yet organic and sometimes meditative and healing. An example is "Garden Improv", performed at Parque de Tranquillidad (see below under Previous Performances for 2008 or click on "Video" under our logo above to see a video of this performance).

2. Music and Meditation (Marcy Jellison, Organizer): In this program, for members of a meditation group or class, first introductory meditation instructions are offered to participants, then the program leader invites the audience to place their attention on sounds especially created for them by the Ensemble. Finally, after an extended period of music sometimes with intervals of silence, the participants are invited to share and discuss their experiences. We have presented this program at the Shambhala Center and at the Tibet House, both in New York City. Roshi Joan Halifax, Abbot of Upaya Zen Center, describes Music and Meditation as "a wonderful program".

3. Jazz: Standard and Otherwise (Richard Carr, Organizer):The Ensemble members also perform Jazz standards, and often combines them on the same program with our Open Improv structures. A Jazz: Standard and Otherwise program was presented at the Society of Illustrators in New York City.

4. Free-style Ragas: Several members of the Ensemble, under the name "Raga-Time", create and present contemporary free-style ragas on Indian instruments such as sitar, dilruba, tabla, pakhavaj, bansuri and surpeti, sometimes together with other members on Western ones. Raga-Time performed for Global Fusion Art (for a video of this performance click on "Video" under our logo above) and for a talk by Dada Vaswani at Town Hall in New York City this Spring.

5. Spirited Chanting: We offer two non-sectarian chanting programs. In "Chanting for Everyone" the audience is invited to participate in chanting mystical sounds, such as mantras and nigunim, and phrases from various spiritual traditions in a call-and-repeat format guided by an experienced chant leader and accompanied by instrumental musicians. It offers a unique opportunity for all people of any faith (or none) to experience their own spirituality and deepen their relationship to it. The Ensemble presented this program in September, 2009 at Integral Yoga Institute in New York City; the program for this presentation is set forth in the Ensemble's Myspace blog cited above.

In our "Global Chanting" program, using a similiar format, the audience is invited to participate in chants for healing and saving our planet and in one or more mantras or chants selected from each of its seven continents.

For booking these special programs, or more information about the Ensemble or its members, please email openmusicensemble@earthlink.net.

COMMISSIONS:

Bespoke Music (Philip Foster, Organizer): The Ensemble creates and performs original music to celebrate a specific event such as a birthday, a wedding, or an anniversary, or to memorialize a specific place or location. For example, we created meditative environments at Trinity Church and at the META Center for the recollection and healing of memories of September 11, 2001 (for a video of the Trinity performance click on the link below under September 11, 2007) and for Bowery Poerty Club, which carries on the tradition of music on the Bowery, we created and performed "The Bowery Suite", a three-part composition with a tribute to Mozart's librettist (who opened a grocery on the Bowery), a section inspired by a composition of Stephen Foster, "the father of American music", written when he lived on the Bowery, and a finale based on the punk music played at CBGB and 313 on the Bowery in the 1970's and 80's (for a CD of this performance see below under Recordings).

Film Scores: We welcome inquiries about commissions for, or the use of our music in, film or videos. Music from our CD, "The Bowery Suite" (see below under Recordings) is part of the soundtrack of "Giver Taker Heartbreaker", a new film by Christopher Arcella (for a video clip of the film with our music see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfYSnZBxJFU).

Classes: Members of the Ensemble lead sessions of the Open Music Circle, see www.myspace.com/openmusiccircle, and are available to provide improvised music for dance, yoga, and martial arts classes.

For inquiries about commissions, or information about the Ensemble or its members, please email openmusicensemble@earthlink.net.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

Open Music and Dance (Marianne Giosa, Organizer): The Ensemble has recently begun to work with dancers and is eager to explore the possibility of collaborating with a dance company. See also Open Music Dance at www.myspace.com/openmusicdance.

Social Committment: The Ensemble is committed to the improvement of our world through musical activities. In furtherance of this committment we created and performed a musical composition for peace, "No More War", at the Poetry Project's annual marathon at St. Mark's church. A video of this performance is available free of charge upon request to any individual or group interested in promoting peace (click on "Videos" under the Ensemble's logo above to see this video on this website).

RECORDINGS:

Our DVD "Peaceful Mind", a video recording of our September 11,2007 performance at Trinity Church (a copy of which is archived in the collection of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum) and our CD "The Bowery Suite", an audio recording of our performance at Bowery Poetry Club in 2008, are available for purchase in Manhattan, at Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery; the Rubin Museum, 150 West 17th Street; The Yippe Cafe, 9 Bleeker Street; The Downtown Music Gallery, 342 Bowery; and The New Museum of Contemporary Art, 225 Bowery; in Brooklyn, at BAM, 30 Lafayette Avenue; and by email to openmusicensemble@earthlink.net

Good to hear you at the Brecht Forum. Some very beautiful music, and the combination of instruments worked well. I appreciated the group's overall sensitivity to allowing the music to flow and shift and evolve.

Thanks for being one of the 3100+ members of Musicians and Artists for World Peace, now in 58 countries, including Donovan, Melanie, Patti LaBelle, Pete Seeger, Melba Moore, the New Rascals, Willie Nelson's Peace Research Institute, the Dalai Lama, Holly Near, Country Joe, Wayne Dyer, Patch Adams, Jean Houston, Dennis Kucinich & Deepak Chopra's Alliance for a New Humanity to mention just a few.

It would be much appreciated if you would consider placing us on your top friends list. If you have lots of friends you can search for us. Go to Change my Top Friends and paste in musiciansforpeace as the MySpace URL in the "Quick Find " dialog box.

BTW, we are joining with people from all over the world to help make the 40th anniversary of Woodstock a true celebration of peace and love through music and collaboration. Please check out our page at http://passion.edu/elearn/mod/resource/view.php?id=1712

Our 40th Anniversary of Woodstock Concert, produced by WoodFest Productions in association with Musicians for Peace, will be a 3-day outdoor festival at the 60 acre Washita Hideaway in Davis, OK. It will have some of the hottest tribute bands around and happens August 14-16, the same weekend as the original festival. This project stems from the vision to play tribute to both the pure love of music and to the artists, producers and concert goers that together made Woodstock the historic and cultural event it was then and will be for generations to come. Please see www.myspace.com/woodfest09

We are also doing a butterfly release at Woodstock West Fest in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park planned for Sunday, October 25, 2009. Our members are doing the Green Zone there and interested vendors and sponsors should contact me at bflyspirit8@aol.com Please also see the producers page at www.2b1records.com/woodstock40sf

We have also been invited to join the planning committee for a 3-day concert called "IMAGINE," in some respects simil
