Jamaica Reggae Legend Little Roy began his illustrious never-ending career in 1968 at Studio One. It was Jackie Mitoo, the late great Keyboardist, who first recorded Little Roy’s ‘Cool it’. Two years later Little Roy signed with Prince Buster, and the following year 1969, he began recording for Matador. The mutually successful relationship began with ‘Bongo Nyah’, which stormed into the Charts at No.1-a tremendous achievement for a youth still going to school. ‘Bongo Nyah’ was just the tip of the iceberg in a string of popular hits by Little Roy.
In 1972, Little Roy took charge of his own career due to exploitation by founding the Inspirational label: Tafari, alongside Maurice Jackson. Now able to rule his own musical destiny, Little Roy recorded the haunting and timeless ‘Prophecy’, followed by the unforgettable worldwide classic ‘Tribal War’. Roots anthems recorded by Little Roy for Tafari include ‘Jah Can Count On I’, ‘Blackbird’, ‘Earth’ and ‘Ticket to Zion’ amongst others.
Between 1975-79, musical genius Little Roy rested from recording the feature in the 12 Tribes Of Israel Functions. He resurfaced in 1980 with songs like ‘Long-time Rocksteady’, and Way Down in Babylon’.
The elusive Rasta man once more went underground for 9 years, only breaking his silence when Freddie Mc Gregor covered his classic ‘Prophecy’; hence in 1989 Little Roy recorded two albums for Tafari ‘Live On’, and ‘Little Roy-Prophesy’
A critically acclaimed gifted singer/songwriter, Little Roy was then inspired to compile his classics for Pressure Sounds and the album went to Studio with Adrian Sherwood to record and produce the modern ‘Long-Time’ album for U-Sound.
Following was ‘More from a Little’ in 1999 for Lion Inc, including the title track; ‘Mamma’, ‘Natty Yard’, and ‘Soldier’.
Recently releasing ‘Children of the Most High’ in 2005 with Pharos Records, Little Roy is still going strong. Proving to be one of the greatest living legends in Reggae today.
