When a passionate clarinet meets a “hot” piano -the sparks fly -not only musically. The German clarinettist Susanne Ortner and the American pianist Tom Roberts met 2006 in Pittsburgh while performing. Subsequently they developed a concert repertoire that can only be described as Hot World Chamber Music.
In addition to their yiddish/creole Fusion (featured on their first CD "A Trip to America") the Roberts will throw now Swing, Calypso, Gipsy, Tango, Rembetika and Valse Musette from Paris into their musical trunk. The contents will be cleverly mixed together in elaborate arrangements.
The duo also immerse themselves into the Jazz-Era of the 20s, 30s, and 40s, with the music of the legendary „Small Groups“ of Benny Goodman, Jelly Roll Morton, Artie Shaw and Sidney Bechet, which come to life in painstaking accurate reproductions. These arrangements evoke the thick sweet air of New Orleans or the glamour of a shimmering dancehall somewhere in Chicago or New York City.
The Duo Ortner/ Roberts has performed throughout the Eastern United States, Canada, as well as Germany.

Susanne Ortner-Roberts - clarinet is internationally acclaimed both as a soloist and as a member of the German Quartet “Sing Your Soul“, and the Ortner-Roberts Duo. Her expressive interpretation of Klezmer music is noted for its authenticity, depth, beauty, and warmth. Likewise her performance of the music of jazz clarinetists Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Sidney Bechet and Johnny Dodds has been recognized for its power and authenticity.
Susanne Ortner-Roberts collaborates with Jazz- and Klezmer musicians from Germany and the USA, such as her husband, pianist Tom Roberts, the Augsburg quartet Sing Your Soul, trumpeter Charlie Caranicas (NYC), and drummer Tom Elrick (Pittsburgh).
As a serious student of Eastern European Folk music she does research and offers Klezmer Workshops in Germany and in the United States. (e.g. Klezmer workshops at the University of Pittsburgh, a master class for the students of Ron Samuel, Duquesne University). Susanne arranges and composes music (e.g. music to “Mazel”, an Amy Hartman play commissioned by the Jewish Theatre of Pittsburgh) and has done several book and film projects. She is currently the subject of a biography being written by a German Television journalist.

Tom Roberts - piano - is one of the leading exponents of early jazz piano in the world today. Ricardo Sciavales named Tom as one of the top stride pianists in his recent book, The Heart and Soul of Stride, Blues, and Swing Piano. Tom has performed on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Kiellor.
He has arranged music for the syndicated PRI show Riverwalk Jazz, Live from the Landing with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, as well as a number of pieces for Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for a concert of the music of Louis Armstrong in October 2006.
He arranged and performed the music for the soundtrack of Martin Scorsese’s film The Aviator, as well as several titles for the film DeLovely. Tom has performed twice at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 2003, once with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops.
He was featured in 2003 in solo with Dick Hyman at the prestigious Jazz In July series at New York’s 92nd St. Y in a concert entitled The Lion, The Lamb, and Luckey. He has arranged music and performed in the series numerous times including the centennial concerts of Bix Beiderbecke, Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang. Tom was the featured pianist at the 2001 and 2009 International Stride Piano Summit in Zurich, Switzerland.
Tom has recorded over 30 compact discs and has performed throughout the United States and Europe including: England, France, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Sweden, Finland, and Switzerland.

Wenn eine leidenschaftliche Klarinette auf ein „hot“ piano trifft, dann sprühen die Funken – nicht nur musikalisch.
Die deutsche Klarinettistin Susanne Ortner und der amerikanische Pianist Tom Roberts trafen 2006 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania auf einem „Gig“ aufeinander. Nachfolgend erarbeiteten sie ein gemeinsames Konzertrepertoire, das besonders treffend mit „Hot World Chamber Music“ umschrieben werden kann. Hot Musik, Swing und Early Jazz wechseln sich ab und verschmelzen gelegentlich mit verschiedenen Genren von "Weltmusik" : So kreieren die beiden Ausnahmemusiker eine außergewöhnliche Fusion von verschiedenen musikalischen Genres. Erweiternd zum Konzept ihres Debut-Albums “A Trip to America“ – A Yiddish/Creole Fusion findet neben Harlem Stride und Klezmer nun Swing, Calypso, Gipsy, Tango, Rembetika und die Pariser Valse Musette Platz im musikalischen Reisekoffer der Roberts und werden in raffinierten Arrangements gekonnt durcheinander gemischt. Auch taucht das Duo tief ein in die Jazz-Era der 20er – 40er Jahre, wenn die legendären „Small Groups“ von Benny Goodman, Jelly Roll Morton, Artie Shaw und Sidney Bechet in akribisch genauen Reproduktion zu neuem Leben erweckt werden und die schwüle und süße Trägheit New Orleans atmen lassen oder aber den Glanz eines blanken Tanzbodens in Chicago oder New York City herauf beschwören.
Das Duo Ortner/ Roberts gastierte bislang in Konzerthallen, renommierten Jazzclubs, Synagogen und Kirchen im Osten der Vereinigten Staaten, in Kanada und in Deutschland.

Susanne Ortner-Roberts hat sich durch ihr ausdrucksstarkes Klarinettenspiel solistisch sowie mit dem Quartett Sing Your Soul und der Duo-Formation Ortner/Roberts international einen Namen gemacht.
Nach einer klassischen Ausbildung am ehemaligen Leopold Mozart Konservatorium Augsburg studierte Susanne an der Universität Augsburg und war nach ihrem 2. Examen für drei Jahre Lehrerin für Deutsch und Musik and der Realschule Vöhringen.
Seit September 2006, zunächst auf Einladung der University of Pittsburgh/ Pennsylvania hin, führt Susanne Schul- und Universitätsprojekte zusammen mit Holocaust-Überlebenden aus Pittsburgh zum Thema „Who are these Germans?“ durch. Neben Wortbeiträgen übernimmt sie hier die musikalische Gestaltung. Um ihrem Ruf dauerhaft nachzugehen, hat sich Susanne aus dem Beamtenverhältnis entlassen lassen und ist seit August 2007 freiberuflich als Musikerin tätig.
Susanne Ortner-Roberts arbeitet mit Jazz- und Klezmermusikern aus Deutschland und den USA eng zusammen, so mit Pianist und Ehemann Tom Roberts, mit dem Augsburger Quartett Sing Your Soul, dem New Yorker Trompeter Charlie Caranicas und dem Schlagzeuger Tom Ellrick. Sie führt forschende und lehrende Tätigkeiten im Feld der Klezmermusik durch (Klezmerworkshops an der University of Pittsburgh, Masterclass für die Klarinettenklasse der University of Duquesne, Workshop an der Creative and Performing Arts Highschool Pittsburgh, Bandteacher der Klezmerband der Agency for Jewish Learning Pittsburgh) komponiert und arrangiert (zuletzt die Musik zu Amy Hartmans Schauspiel „Mazel“, Jewish Theatre Pittsburgh) und arbeitet an Buch- und Filmprojekten.
Ihr Hauptwohnsitz ist nun in Pittsburgh, USA.

Tom Roberts zählt zu den führenden Vertreter der frühen Jazzpiano-Stile, besonders des Harlem Stride. (so Ricardo Sciavales in The Heart and Soul of Stride, Blues, and Swing Piano).
Er spielte unter anderem bei Johnny Carsons.. Tonight Show, The Statler Brothers Show auf TNN sowie bei A Prairie Home Companion mit Garrison Kiellor. Zudem arrangierte Tom Musik für die PRI Show Riverwalk Jazz, Live from the Landing mit der Jim Cullum Jazz Band. Er wird mehrfach als Solist zu internationalen Stride Summits eingeladen, so zu dem International Stride Piano Summit in Zürich, 2001 und 2009.
Tom Roberts war Pianist bei Vince Giordanos Nighthawks in New York City, sowie sechs Jahre lang Pianist und musikalischer Direktor von Leon Redbone.
Als gebürtiger Pittsburgher spielte Tom Roberts in allen namhaften Jazz Clubs im French Quarter und auf den “riverboats” von New Orleans. Er arrangierte und spielte Musik zum Soundtrack „Aviator“ von Martin Scorsese mit Leonardo di Caprio in der Hauptrolle, ebenso einige Titel für den Film „DeLovely“. Ebenso komponierte er eine Reihe von Titeln für Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz Lincoln Center Orchestra, so zu einem Konzert zur Musik Louis Armstrongs 2006. Tom Roberts gastierte 2003 zwei Mal in der legendären Carnegie Hall in New York, einmal zusammen mit Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops und konzertierte mehrfach zusammen mit Dick Hyman bei den renommierten Jazz In July series at New York’s 92nd St. Y.
Tom nahm bislang über 40 Compact Disc auf tourt regelmäßig mit Bands aus New York und New Orleans, so der Original Dixieland Jazzband und dem Lousiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble. Neben seinem pianistischen Können ist Tom ein versierter Musikhistoriker mit besonderem Fokus auf der Early Jazz Era. Er schreibt Artikel für Musikmagazine, beispielsweise Piano Today und ist häufig zu Gast bei National Public Radio.
