About me:

At the turn of this century, a young ambitious Latino rose from the rap cyphers in the hip hop underground and hustled his way into the legendary Atlantic Records. In his time there, he saw the unfair practices of million dollar Marketing budgets for musical acts that did not warrant the support, while artists that were loved in the street were never extended an opportunity to grow globally. After a conversation about the power of true hip hop with mixtape king Justo Faison (rest in peace) who was working in the Rap Promotions Department at the time, the man who came to be known as PaPo Swiggity saw the entertainment world with new, experienced eyes. He vowed that he would market and promote himself virally and with more sticking power than most of the major label superstar wanna-be's...just to prove the point that corporate funding should not dictate who is popular, the love of the people should be the determining factor.

Almost 9 years later, PaPo Swiggity is almost a household name to many urban Latinos in todays internet social networks. After perfecting his craft as an event coordinator through working on some of the biggest latino nightlife parties in New York City, he returned in 2007 with a new mission, and a powerful ally in the founder of a decade old cultural media entity, sofritoforyoursoul.com. The idea was to marry the academic, cultural and activist organizations with the people in the street who otherwise would not have been aware or exposed to to these progressive programs.

This idea has been manifested today in the Capicu Poetry & Cultural Showcase!

I dont remember the exact moment it happened, but there came this grand idea, an epiphany perhaps revealed in a series of dreams, expressing to me that we need to celebrate our peoples similarities and collective history since they are much more powerful than our socially constructed differences. Some elements that added credibility to this idea were:

*The work of psychologist Carl Jung- who believed that the world had a collective unconscious, which accounts for the universality of many themes, stories and images around the world.

*The book Soul On Ice by Eldridge Cleaver- A marker of the 60s Civil Rights era which lays out the blue print of racist American society and its proponents in media and government. Strangely enough many of the themes written about 40 years ago still apply to day.

*The book Motorcycle Diaries by Che Guevera- written when he was not yet an icon of revolution, but a common man who was just coming across the idea that borders were meaningless; the struggles of the people are one and the same.

The point is that i came to realize that as far advanced as we have been blessed to become, many of us are still trapped in racist, sexist, and otherly prejudiced grudges of the past.. many of these grudges having no palpable origin, except for the idea that this is the way things "should" be or "have always" been. We work to break these molds of an oppressive yesterday in order to allow growth for a progressive tomorrow.

Okay, so youre hot shyt, right? You got your LiveStrong yellow band. As a matter of fact you got all the colored bands for different causes.. your arm looks like a box of Froot Loops.
You joined "The One Campaign" to ask the President to fight poverty at World Summit, and you were aware enough to check the "Not Spam" block on your junk folder filter. You watched ALL the Michael Moore movies... TWICE! Question...?
have you made sure that everyone in your family is okay-have you called that person that lives alone? Have you checked yourself out at the doctor for STDs and cancer? Have you made peace with that person you have stopped speaking to? Its great to explore about worldly forests, but dont forget to mind the delicate flowers in your own backyard.

Who I'd like to meet:

I know you're probably looking at my friends list and saying, "whats this guys deal"? LOL well, if you must know, I'm not into "whoring" friends on MySpace or anything of that nature. Note that most of my friends are young urban people who are into entertainment (music/film/poetry), fashion, or the nightlife scene. I try to connect people, is that a crime? Heck, isn't this what MySpace is supposed to be about? Networking, folks ;)
Maybe you need a photographer? A producer? A promoter? An event coordinator? Chances are, i know one

    Poetstock!

Never before has this been done, and hopefully it will be successfully repeated after this all over the world, again and again….

Our aim is to bring together poets from all over, who produce all genres of poetry for a night of mingling, poetry, shameless self promotion….  Each poet will have the opportunity to read their work on stage, sell their work to those who would like to buy, and mingle with the best poets of our generation.

It will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 9 PM

And the owner of STUDIO PARK in Atlanta has been gracious enough to open his doors to us without charging us ANYTHING!!!

You seriously CAN’T miss this~you HAVE to be there!  It is the chance of the lifetime, and the bigger we make it, the more attention we poets will get.

Poetry is NOT dead~let’s show the world that it is living and breathing~

***BTW~we are looking for a talented DJ to spin between reads~so if you have what it takes or know someone who does, please email me.

****ALL are welcome!  Whether you are a poet, or love poetry, we hope you will all come, tell your friends about it, and your friends’ friends-blog it, bulletin it, email it, scream about it from the rooftops~Whatever it takes!!!

    celoso defectuoso
