   Paul's Blurbs
About me:
Sometimes I play basketball and sometimes I write. Sometimes I'm good at one of those, sometimes I'm good at both of them, and sometimes I'm good at neither. Whichever the case, there is a certain population of the world who enjoys when I do the latter about the former. Of course, there exists another population that would prefer that I never do either.

And then there's the rest of the world (approximately 5,999,750,000 people). Those folks are way too busy to care whether I'm writing or playing basketball. Their time is taken up with concerns like a search for potable water, worries over the next malaria outbreak, or the debate between Alba and Biel. (Biel, obviously.)

Since those people aren't here, I don't have to worry about pleasing or angering them. For the rest of you, some tidbits:

If you aren't hip to the whole myspace thing, and want to send an email, use this address:

mysocalledcareer@gmail.com

To find the wonderful book pictured below, which chronicles a few years of my life as a professional basketball player, click here...and then type in my name. For some reason, I can no longer link to my book directly, making this a clunky process. Then again, clunky is what we've all come to expect from myspace.

Wasn't that fun?

Click here to link to my original Suns blog.

Find an article I wrote for Esquire magazine here.

An exchange I did with the great Neal Pollack for slate.com here and a piece I did on my own for that website here.

And this is a remarkably in-depth wikipedia entry on the cartoon called "Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears". I'm glad I found it; I was struggling to remember the name of that show.

Two things:

1. Any creative writing student worth their degree wouldn't make such horrific spelling errors. After three years of workshops during which fellow students and professors tell you your work is drivel, you minimize the number of things that can be identified as problems with your poem, short story, novella, novel, or whichever form of literature you choose as your emphasis.

2. I like the "Paul, Paul Shirley." While probably unintentional, it is very James Bond.

Be great to see ya – if not ... I guess I won’t see ya. You level of rocking is adequate so rock on – Palky

I have to say, out of all your stuff that I have read, this one I am very jealous of you getting to meet Emily Haines. Is she as sexy as one might think she is?

Another well-written piece on the Worldwide Leader. Question for you: I bumped into a picture of a rather tall man wearing some overwhelming all white outfit (with matching hat and scarf) on another networking site using your name, claiming to be from Spain. Can you put the rumors about the demise of your wardrobe to rest?

Very bold of you to write the latest ESPN piece. It was thoughtful and engaging. I'm sure in the long run "everything will be ok."

As someone who's followed you since Simmons first started plugging you in his space, I'm sorry to hear about your break up. I hope the music continues to make you feel better. It always seems to work for me.

Enjoyed the latest ESPN post. Brave of you to get that personal. My condolences. I also love that Pearl Jam song. Their rockers are good, but nothing beats their melancholy ballads. "I Got Id" is another by them that's good for feeling depressed. I disagree with the poster below me and say go for depressing music and let yourself wallow in it for a while. I always listen to the first two Counting Crows albums. Soul-crushing.

Once again great blog. I hurt for you bro, I think everyone that reads this can understand the correlation between music and heartache. If it wasn't for the heartbreak there wouldn't be great songs out there. With that said I feel you need to put on something upbeat (Sublime always helped me with that back in the day) and rock out. Good or bad it always sucks to break up, but life is a one lap race and you pick your self up and march on.

Third Eye Blind was amazing live. New album coming out in June should be good too. If you are still in the States you should try and catch them live...

Good luck with the ankle then, I hope you can get back to playing.

I saw you play in Detroit during the 03-04 season, if I remember correctly you played quite a few minutes.

In response to your article about jazz: I used to not get jazz, but I wanted to. Then I took a Jazz History class in college, and through that, I got it. Now I enjoy it and understand it. And for what it's worth, it's with the same ear that I enjoy jazz that I enjoy the Mars Volta. Keep up the good writing!
