I am not sure how each of these artists have influenced me, but I am inspired every time I hear their music: Coldplay, Lauryn Hill, U2, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, israel Houghton, Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens, India Arie, Mutemath, Karen Clark Sheard, Fred Hammond, John Legend, Donnie McClurkin, and The Beatles.
Paul Stephens is an emerging songwriter and worship leader who grew up in Los Angeles. He has a passion for his community and desires to impact his generation. He believes that music “is a force that shapes culture and moves the human heart.” What better way to communicate to this generation than through the language it understands best - music?
Great King is Paul’s debut album. He says that these songs “have essentially been evolving for the past seven years,” Which is how long he has been writing. “I started writing worship music when I was in high school. I would write songs, then record them on cassette tapes and give them to my worship leader at the church.” It was not long until the congregation was singing Paul’s songs on a weekly basis. He continued writing throughout high school and college. He was a worship leader at Azusa Pacific University for three years, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Commercial Music. Shortly after graduation, he became one of the worship leaders at his home church, Faith Community, where Dr. Jim Reeve is the senior pastor.
Paul’s music compels you to explore the depth of who God really is. “The world will offer us every explanation for why God does not exist, and why should we live for ourselves,” Paul says. “But I believe that the truth will stand in the end - That Christ died for sins, and rose again.” As one track from his debut album says, “All that my eyes can see/Your love is what I find/All over history/I see Your design/O God of ages I believe.” It is Paul’s heart to invite listeners into an experience of worship, where we stand in the midst of a world that is hostile to truth, but never lose sight of the one who is truth, the one who is Jesus Christ
