About me: PEELING was an NYC-based collective of writers, performers, and directors who collaborated in the exploration of their Asian American identities. From these wide-ranging and, often, autobiographical journeys, Peeling created memorable theater experiences that were both fantastic and familiar - shaped by the imagination and personal struggle, and always coming from the heart...
The group was originally founded in 1995 as "Peeling the Banana" by Gary San Angel, at the Asian American Writer's Workshop. In 2000, the group re-invented itself as a true collective and simply became known as, "PEELING."
With sold out performances at the Joseph Papp Public Theater, the Kraine, 2nd Stage, numerous colleges and universities, and other venues PEELING presented its poignant blend of poetry, theater, dance, and music to audiences from coast to coast. The group decided to disband shortly after reaching the height of its collective expression by, first, creating a seamless one-act play ending in a musical number and, finally, a three-week festival of One-Act Plays (Under the Skin, 2003).
PEELING extends a big shout out to ALL of our supporters, friends, mentors, and donors through the years. Thank you for all the love and support you gave to us!
Wow, so great to read that timeline and history! Thank you Jin and Gita for putting that together. It's wonderful to see how an idea spreads and evolves over time, and all the creative initiative that has been unleashed.
It would be fun to have a grand trans-continental reunion someday in the future when we're all old. (oh - I already am...)
In any case I am sure Peeling will arise again someday in some new incarnation, and continue to develop and provide opportunities for the Asian American creative voice on stage.
(one tiny correction: The Philly Summit actually took place in April of 2000)

Part cabaret, part objet d'art, part truth or dare. In a night of all new 5-minute-or- shorter "speed plays" asking and addressing the question of what Asian America wants, F. Omar Telan and a rotating cast from around the country throw their lives onto stage full tilt and take you on a roller coaster ride of comedy, drama, serious reflection, and pure theatrical entertainment.
No pretense. No characters. No lies. The Edge of the World is a great art experiment. We invited a dozen of the decade's most inventive artists and dared them to go beyond the traditional identity piece while creating a show that's grounded in personal experience. From the diverse and intersecting worlds of spoken word, comedy, writing and performance we've found unique ways to ponder: Are you what Asian America is looking for? So, what don't you want people to know about you? What meaning do you find in a piece of bread? And, are you going to bother to vote?
Through a process involving chance meetings, telecommunications, and good old-fashioned time in a room together, the artists in the Edge of the World collaborate for an evening of performance art that will make you laugh, should make you mad, might make you proud, and that no matter what will challenge your expectations of Asian American theater.
Featuring Regie Cabico, John Castro, Royd Hatta, Rob
