"..PFE.. is a kind of non-solo project I've started late 2001, few months after leaving Paris for Italy, at the end of ego:echo tour: the end of "my" ..ULAN BATOR.. (though we performed together again from late 2005 to spring 2007). ..PFE.. was officially presented as Olivier with ..Giulio C. Vetrone.. (Halftones, Nada...), ..Francesco Billét.. (Cut, Super Argo...) and ..Nicolas Marmin.. (Aka_Bondage, Colder...) in Torino at Docks Dora, early 2002, thanks to my dear Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo aka (r), aka Larsen... .. We've toured as a band from 2002 to early 2005. For the late'05 shows I toured as "PFE solo" or "duo" (with Giulo C.Vetrone) but everybody's fine, there are new excellent members (..Franck Lantignac.. -..Ulan Bator!..-, ..Seb Martel.., ..Nicholas Thomas..) and PFE will be back early 2008... .. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++.. .. .. ..PERMANENT FATAL ERROR | LAW SPEED.. It's been recorded in the mountains near Reggio Emilia (Italy) at Urs Studio, taped and mixed by Lionel Darenne with Simone Filippi and myself, for 11 days, a to z. The musicians are Giulio C. Vetrone (guitar, arrangements..), Billét (drums, shalala..), and Aka_bondage (some bass and electronics). I play acoustic guitars, various key with effects, bass, etc..and most of all composed the stuff. ..A brilliant opera for 3 fingers..... .. In the meantime, in 2003 and 2004 I've toured a bit with ..DAMO SUZUKI.. (CAN), in France, as part of the "French doctors collective" ("Hollyaris" 45/indigo, live in Paris.).. and introduced him in Italy for a tour in late 2003, inviting people from Larsen, Zu, Starfuckers, Uncode Duello... to join the party... .. From june 2005 to june 2006, after our "Collective Metz" (or "Faust incl.Ulan Bator") in 1996/97 -just released now by the way-, the nice story with ..FAUST.. has restarted. We toured the UK (see .....In autumn.. recent release), and performed also in Sicily (Catania), France (Lyon nuits sonores festival and Villette Sonique fest. in Paris)... .. Late 2004 started a collaboration/duo with ..Xabier Iriondo.. entitled ....BIAS!..... A first strange EP was released by Wallace records later the same year... .. From september 2005 to may 2007, I also restarted to perform with ..ULAN BATOR... The first months we've even been the "original trio" (Cambuzat/Manchion/Lantignac) and toured Italy and Sloveny early 2006. Then later with the new drummer Alessio Goffredi. In the mean time also some improvized gigs with Amaury, as a duo entitled "CARGO CULTE".. .. -.. .. Permanent Fatal Error fait plus, son "Deaf Blues" est epoustouflant. Permanent Fatal Error vient d'Italie, le createur du groupe et son leader est Olivier Manchion, un gaillard plutot remuant initiateur de projets divers et guitariste du groupe culte italien, Ulan Bator. Parti d'un projet solo, il aboutit avec l'aide de trois autres musiciens à un projet de groupe. Le quartet, comme en temoigne le titre "Law Speed", joue avec les lois de la vitesse, ou pour parler en musicien, avec les tempi. Avec la virtuosite de Tortoise, le son limpide et appuy de Shellac et une celebration de la lenteur dans le style de Slint, Permanent Fatal Error evolue elegamment entre le rock instrumental, la guitare et le jazz. Quand les autres groupes instrumentaux se perdent force de vouloir trop jouer et compliquent en vain leurs compositions, PFE reussit donner chacune de ses pistes une aura inoubliable. Ancien bassiste et cofondateur de Ulan Bator, ce Francais exil en Italie y serait pour beaucoup dans la russite artistique des premiers albums du trio. Ceux-ci retrouveront avec plaisir ce fidle ami de l'ombre, en pleine force de l'age, menant avec serenite ses troupers au sein de l'entreprise Permanent Fatal Error. L'homme n'a pas mis au panier sa tete chercheuse, ici au service d'un post-folk evolutif et reveu. "LawSpeed" est avant tout un disque cerebral, qui supporte mal une ecoute fragmentee, Preferant les trajectoires sinusoidales aux lignes droites, manchion et ses acolytes elaborent des structures en mouvement avec une precision quasi clinique. tel un Mogwai sans sucre ou un Bstrd revenu des enfers, Permanent Fatal Error petrit delicatement sa matiere premiere pour offrir chaque note un large espace d'expression, sans toutefois comprometttre l'harmonie d'ensemble. de cet album bati sur du sable on retiendra l'ascension rythmique lancinante de LowLawSpeed, ou encore l'irruption d'une trompette funambule sur B..Side, qui evoque les premiers pas de CAN. Ce n'est d'ailleurs pas un hasard si Olivier Manchion accompagne aujourd'hui Damo Suzuki, chaman historique du groupe allemand, lors de ses folles prestations sceniques. Il est un monde soutterain ou' cette rencontre se devait d'advenir.".... .. ..→ Musicboom.. 2004 by Alex Franquelli.. .."Conoscevo gli Ulan Bator ed intuivo un forte legame con la melodia, con le propensioni acustiche ed i riflessi armonici propri dell'intimismo che riesce a sfuggire ogni definizione se non quella dell'effetto che scatena, dell'enfasi positiva propria dei suoni dalle frequenze della musicalit pi vera e calda. Intuivo tutto ci ma le mie orecchie non lo sentivano, i suoni sfuggivano fisicamente a queste connotazioni e mi perdevo nello sperimentalismo evoluto di un trio dalla chimica difficilmente ripetibile. Dietro i toni pi bassi c'era Oliver Manchion ed il suo dinamismo sempre un passo entro l'avanguardia; una ricerca assidua del ritmo al di fuori delle sue costanti e delle rette logiche. Oggi lo ritroviamo dietro i Permanent Fatal Error a curarne i tratti meno ruvidi, le sonorizzazioni elettriche hanno lasciato il passo ad armonizzazioni concentriche che riportano ai Karate, al krautrock e ad alcuni accenni di jazz (soprattutto in un brano come B..side_part2 in pratica il "centro" di una trilogia compositiva). Il respiro lento e cupo, quasi nervosamente scarno, greve per tutta la durata del lavoro e trova il suo apice nella bellissima Low.Law.Speed, nei suoi ricami acustici che sembrano evocare la seguente, altrettanto affascinante Sunflowers forse la pi "canzone", la meno evoluta del lotto ma al tempo stesso l'elemento che richiama maggiormente gli anni '70, certe atmosfere la Delirium. solo l'anticamera del quasi-silenzio di Deaf Blues, della sua non-forma che si sviluppa naturale nella conclusiva Treep: un insieme etereo e mistico che racchiude in s lo spirito di questo album indeciso, atipico, speciale e pieno di riferimenti importanti al pensiero, all'avanguardia pi dolce e a quella vibrazione che ha sempre vissuto nascosta tra le pieghe sonore di onde basse e calde e solo ora pu uscire a respirare da sola in un sogno magnetico di intime riflessioni.".... .. ..→ Koelner.. 2004/11 by Christian Meyer.. ..PLATTE DES MONATES "FEHLERKORREKTUR" Das italienische Quartett verbindet minimalistischen Post-Rock mit improvisierten Jazz-Passagen : PostRock Olivier Manchion hatte bereits zusammen mit der Band Ulan Bator mehrere Alben eingespielt, bevor er sein Soloprojekt Permanent Fatal Error um den Gitarristen Giulio Vetrone, den Bassisten Nicolas Marmin und den Schlagzeuger Francesco Billt erweiterte und das erste Album "Law Speed" aufnahm. Komponiert sind die Stcke nach wie vor alle (einzige Ausnahme ist die Gemeinschaftskomposition "Nord") von Manchion, wobei deren Aufbau auch auf einige improvisatorische Freiheiten schlieen lsst. Die elf Tracks des Albums unterscheiden sich deutlich voneinander, allerdings findet man diese Unterschiede auch innerhalb der Stcke. Grundlegend fr die meisten Songs ist das stoische Schlagzeug, das weit im Vordergrund steht, aber nur ein rhythmisches Moment neben vielen ist. hnlich wie bei den langen Minimal-Stcken der legendren letzten TalkTalk-LP "Laughing Stock" schrauben sich die Stcke gleichmig im rhythmischen Einklang von Gitarre und Schlagwerk den Hhepunkten entgegen. Doch sind Permanent Fatal Error deutlicher interessiert an dramaturgischen Wendungen, Breaks, die in vllig andere Richtungen berleiten: Pltzlich tauchen da leise gezupfte Gitarrenparts aus den anschwellenden Stcken auf, brechen sich jazzige Blserpassagen Bahn oder stren dezente Umweltgerusche. Die gesamte Platte ist voller berraschender Wendungen. Das lsst wiederum mehr an das Flaggschiff des Post-Rock Tortoise denken und die Kombination dessen mit jazzigen Passagen kennt man von dem The-Notwist-Seitenprojekt Tied + Tickled Trio. Damit befinden sich Permanent Fatal Error in guter Gesellschaft. All diese Bands waren und sind interessiert an einer Verbindung von Aspekten der Minimal Music mit Jazz und Rock. Genau dies machen Permanent Fatal Error auf "Law Speed", einer Platte, die virtuos und in atemberaubend reinem Klang spielerisch Kontinuitt und Bruch miteinander abwechseln lsst und dabei doch ein homogenes Ganzes sprbar macht.".... .. .. .. .. .. .. ....
