Peter Tickell is a fiddle player from Newcastle in the North East of England. Having started playing at the tender age of 6 (much against his will) he soon began to enjoy going to orchestra instead of footy (the two fell, tragically, on the same night). He took part in many competitions as a wee nipper, winning all Northumbrian opens on three consecutive occasions, reaching the final of the 2001 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award and the semi-final of BBC Young Musician of the Year. His musical influences are varied and eclectic, having trained classically and been strongly influenced by the music of Northumberland and the Borders, he also played piano and guitar from a young age. Aged 16, he joined the Kathryn Tickell Band and decided he wanted to play the fiddle full time, instead of pursuing a career on the right wing for Blyth Spartans. At 17 he was appointed leader of Young Sinfonia orchestra, and has since had the pleasure of playing with Northern Sinfonia's Bradley Creswick, Evelyn Glennie, Peatbog Faeries, The Unusual Suspects, Fraser Fifield, Mr Mcfall's Chamber, Kris Drever, Jon Redfern, Colin Steele's 'Stramash' & Lindisfarne's Billy Mitchell amongst others. His greatest living memory is being smiled at once by Peter Beardsley and his most embarrassing moment was thinking his little pecker (anag. Peter Tickell) was hanging out during a gig. Fortunately for everyone involved, it wasn't.
(in honour of Robert ‘Bobby’ Carmichael Mitchell, 19/7/1924- 8/4/1993)
Mine Host of the twinkling left foot, wing- raiding Scot, this Border Reiver was a man of magic, made full backs disappear. ‘Dazzler’ we called him, he tied the ball to his toes, took it for a walk. Wor Bobby bobbing along, criss-crossing patterns through flat defences. His waving hair streaked under the waves of ‘Popular Side’ crowds: classic moments flickering on film, roars on a soundtrack, Cup goals laid on a plate.
Thank you, thank you so much.....if you dont mind I'll just sit here quietly for a while and listen to you beautiful sound because it's just fab and then.....I shall return....return to listening to my very beautiful 7yr old.... practicing her tunes on her violin...not quite so beautiful....yet.....oh the joy ;-)
