Singer/songwriter Philip Gibbs is a native of Austin TX, but has ancestral roots in the Mississippi Delta, the Oklahoma Dust Bowl, and Appalachia, reaching back to the earliest settlement of that country. It's not surprising then, that for years he has felt irresistibly compelled to play music, given the amount of great music his genes have been exposed to over the centuries. For fifteen years now, he has been writing and performing songs in America. Recently, Gibbs has been honored to have six of his songs covered by five other artists on record – four for other artists' independent records and two for demos for Focus Features. Also, in 2005, Gibbs introduced two new songs in Austin in an extended-run Vortex Production of Sleeping Beauty, which is now enjoying its second sold-out run. ............................................................................................................................................................... "Gibbs proves to be a sensible and crafty songwriter." --Dante Dominick, Rockzillaworld ............................................................................................................................................................... "[Gibbs' album, Paper Crosses is] a jazz-influenced country album, which works really well… a ten-track, forty-minute pleasure trip…" --Sean Claes, InSite Magazine of Austin ............................................................................................................................................................... "[Brent Allen]'s got a Philip Gibbs song [on his recent album There's A Lot of Folks Like Me], "The Whiskey Won't Help" (and Phil oughta know??)" --Duggan Flanakin, Flanfire ............................................................................................................................................................... "'She's Gonna Go' [written by Charlie Faye and Philip Gibbs & recorded on Charlie's new album Wilson St.] is like a country standard written years ago though it's very much about now." --Paul Zollo, bluerailroad ................................................................................................................................................................ In the popular Spring 2005 Vortex production of Sleeping Beauty Phil portrayed "Dave, a prince who writes his own ballads. (Philip Gibbs penned the character's songs himself.) He and Briar Rose could settle for the "happily ever after" that's typically tacked onto their story, but they defer that so they can write more adventures for their lives. It's an intriguing alternative to what we get in the traditional tale of the Sleeping Beauty, and the same may be said for this pleasing production overall." --Robert Faires, The Austin Chronicle ................................................................................................................................................................ Gibbs has been honored to have had seven songs recorded by six other very worthy artists.
