In a continual flurry of musical releases, performances, and joint projects during the past decade, the polyglot DJ and producer Phil Stumpf has helped build an enduring reputation for German electronic music in Paris. His 2001 co-creation of Minimal Dancin (one of several continuing collaborations with partner Sam Rouanet) is largely to thank for this, having produced the remarkable run of residency at the Nouveau Casino that introduced Parisian audiences to the likes of Trentemoller, T.Raumschmiere, Sascha Funke, Metro Area, Booka Shade and Roman Flügel. Along the way, Stumpf started organizing events that promote cultural exchange and dialogue about electronic music, notably Deutsch+Minimal (with the Goethe Institut), ClubClub (a club exchange project between cities), and the Festival Music-Allemand, an annual German music festival held in Paris.
As a DJ and musician, Stumpf has performed in Asia, Europe, North America and South America. He began his career in Germany in the early 90s, playing in a number of indie bands before forming Oh, a group that combined instumental postrock with electronic dancefloor elements. In 1997 he met Rouanet, and the duo, known as Duplex 100, began recording on labels such as Morris/Audio, Treibstoff, and Initial Cuts. That success was followed up with the 2000 formation of Canvas (with Rouanet and James Sindatry), an instrumental electronic jazz project which has released two acclaimed albums (the latter, Undone, was released in 2009 under the group’s current name, The Seasons). In addition to these projects and a day job as a physician, Stumpf has made time for DJ releases on a host of labels, including Out of Orbit, Frozen North, Trenton, worldwide bookings. He lives in the eleventh arrondissement of Paris.
