Randy Wine (U2, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, +) has come in as full producer on the new Fire Horse Girl album. Additional core members of Pi’s recording team include such talented musicians as Fredo Ortiz, the Beastie Boys’ drummer, on percussion, and Michael Bluestein on keyboards, the consummate sideman who has played with Foreigner, Boz Scaggs, and Enrique Iglesias. Drummer Joel Alpers, who composed and produced the music for the upcoming ’09 John Travolta/Robin Williams film Old Dogs, played drums, and the amazing bassist Paul Eastburn played upright and electric bass, violin, and viola. Guitarist Aaron Jacobs was a co-writer on two of the album’s top songs, “Reckless” and “Santa Ana,” and Justin Reinhardt, a killer pianist and the composer of the score to the 1996 film Swingers, played grand piano on a few tracks and often plays live with Pi during her LA shows.

Collaborating with veteran producer/engineer Randy Wine, the new album Fire Horse Girl evokes the whispers of great 70’s singer-songwriters, yet its approach and lyrics are completely fresh. To celebrate the new release, Pi will embark on a mini bi-coastal tour this fall. She’ll perform in NYC on September 23rd and has three California dates scheduled in October: Ventura - 10/3, SF - 10/10, LA - 10/17. The album will be available digitally in October as well as physically through online retailers CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon and many others as well as at select retail stores. In the meantime, you can purchase 3 pre-released songs exclusively at IndiEclectic.com.
With over 40 film and TV placements, Pi - a smoky alto - has been heard on such networks as MTV, Oxygen, and Nickelodeon. Listen for songs from Fire Horse Girl on Nickelodeon's Zoey 101, Drake and Josh, and ICarly, and MTV's The Kardashians, and The Real World, and Oxygen's Bad Girl's Club!
The name of Pi’s new album relates to the year of her birth. According to Chinese Astrology, females born in the year of the Fire Horse, which only comes around once every 60 years, are said to consume everything in their path and wreak havoc wherever they go. They are considered dangerous, headstrong, and are seen as deadly to men. Pi relates, “I thought the FHG story fit the record beautifully. The chaos, upheaval, and creativity of my youth was my fate: not something I caused but a destiny to embrace. Being a FHG has given me so many stories to tell through music.”
More about Pi:
After spending a few years as a top tier studio and touring musician in the San Francisco Bay area Pi, aka Pi Jacobs, teamed up with Tommy Boy artist/producer Pfilbryte for her first album, Irrational, in 2001. The response to Irrational was overwhelming, leading Pi to a management deal with NYC’s Alabina Entertainment, and a European record deal with the French Atoll Music label, and widespread licensing for film and television including placement in I Hate My Job, High School Reunion, Sorority Life, Battle of the Sexes, Making the Band, and the film Coffee Clutch.
In 2002, Pi left San Francisco for NYC, touring the US several times, and holding down a long-standing residency at the Paradise Café in the Chelsea District of Manhattan. In 2004 Pi moved again, this time to Los Angeles where she recorded her second album Beat Mining in Dark Places, which was enthusiastically received by critics and licensed to several films including The Appointment and Fixing Rhonda. Singer Magazine claimed, “Her crystal-clear voice is flexible and flawless, rising to the call put forth by her lyrics and instrumentation.”
Several tours and placements later, Pi’s 2007 Randy Wine-mixed and mastered release, The Curse of the Songwriter, appealed to critics around the country. Songs from Curse were featured in several popular TV shows such as Road Rules, Real World Sydney, Real World Denver (MTV), Bad Girls Club (Oxygen) and Zoey 101 (NICK), and Wayne Wang’s 2007 film The Princess of Nebraska. Pi's 2007 album, The Curse of the Songwriter is available @iTunes and CD Baby.
