You’ll always remember the first time you head Damien Jurado’s voice. Where you were; what you were doing; who you were with. The Seattle musician manages to tap into something private, something unexplored, with every one of his songs, from those recorded back in the mid-90s on tapes and released through his own, cassette-only label, to his most devastating and introspective work on Ghost Of David (2000) and his recent record on Secretly Canadian, And Now That I’m In Your Shadow. And you’ll always remember the one that most affects you; for us, it was the ominous, helpless finale to 2005’s On My Way To Absence – and Uncut magazine explain why, perfectly: “Amongst the empty farmhouses, black widows, pink champagne and guns in the drawer, Jurado’s riveting narratives explore sunken relationships and thwarted dreams, perhaps most tellingly on the outstanding ‘A Jealous Heart Is A Heavy Heart’, mordant strings giving way to a lonely piano coda and a desperate plea - “Grow old with me” - fading into oblivion. It’s the most heartbreaking thing he’s recorded”. This is Jurado’s first time in the UK for two years, playing just two special shows in Manchester and London, both in stunning settings. A sure sell-out.

Like fellow Liverpudlians Hot Club De Paris...with bouncy, choppy riffs and a very much danceable rhythm, synths swirl like a demented fairground ride while the boys perform fantastic, sing along harmonies. MAKE NOISE AND DANCE

This is an unmissable show! After the rave reviews of Sam Amidon's last show in Manchester, where, in league with Red Deer Club, we arranged for Sam to play at the Unitarian Chapel with a string quartet, we couldn't wait for the opportunity to bring him back. Since that time, his album All is Well has been critically lauded and the media have finally caught on to the New Yorker's immense talent.

Incredibly, the opportunity that has arisen includes a touring party from Sam's Icelandic label, Bedroom Community. Sam will be performing with a six-piece band, including legendary producer and Bedroom Community chief, Valgeir Sigurðsson.

And if that isn't enough for you, Valgeir will also be performing tracks from his own album, Ekvílibríum, a critically lauded masterpiece of electronica-laced folk.

To cap it all, the night will be kicked off by support from Manchester's own acoustic-electronica maestro, Denis Jones; having waited two years to play in this wonderful venue, he will be playing his fourth show here inside two months, after support for Jack Rose, Phosphorescent and Chris Corsano.

Easily one of the most important bands of our times (and we don't say that lightly), Stars of the Lid are the highpoint of the ambient genre. Their influence on the music that really matters over the last decade has been huge, and we're incredibly honoured to be hosting them again in Leeds. This gig will be very very different, and very very special. Stars of the Lid have excelled at designing subtle, minimalist epics which sound like they're being played on a single multifaceted organic instrument.
A wise man once described SOTL as "divine classical drones without the tedious intrusion of drums, or vocals.
"

The Declining Winter is the musical project of Richard Vincent Adams of Leeds UK, the co-founder of the continuing group Hood and a full time stricken office worker.
What does it sound like? Richard says "cassette tapes spilling out of the glovebox of a 1970's Datsun Sunny somewhere in the north of England, captured on Super 8 film".
He's not far off. Live he is joined by a few more people to bring the beautiful pastoral feel to life. Wonderful stuff.

A Forest of Sound presentation.
Tickets are £10 and are available from We Got Tickets and Jumbo Records.
It’ll be £12 on the doors, and doors are at 8pm.

TOM HICKOX
Blending the macabre narrative and vocal performance of such songwriting heavyweights as Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and Scott Walker, with melodies that permeate and resonate, Hickox’s music is unique on the British music scene. At once complicated and simple, quirky and passionate; these songs reveal a great voice and song.

’This provides a lesson to bands like Clor in how to combine electronica with both musical and emotional depth. It’s well constructed, intelligent music from a singer/songwriter who aims to be different and not peddle out soppy ballads.’
Manilla Magazine
.
SPARKY DEATHCAP
Sparky Deathcap wears a hoodie with felt animal ears sewn onto the hood, and twists proggy guitar loops against the sound of himself whistling a lovely dawn chorus." -Emily Bick, Plan B Magazine

"Very witty-Time out

"It’s reminiscent of a slightly more good humoured Smog with its dry crackle and old-fashioned hue" –Manchestermusic. co. uk

KLAUS SAYS BUY THE RECORD
"Musically, it’s pitched somewhere between Anthony and the Johnsons and Beirut, with lashings of piano and the occasional ukelele. Quality wise, it’s going to sneak up behind you and steal your eardrums - it’s a genuinely surprising fantastic collection of songs, and probably one of the most accomplished albums to emerge locally in the last ten years. "
Blam!Magazine

You have no excuse other than poor taste, and maybe (just maybe) death.

Apr 22 2008 5:37 PM

Hedge presents the legendary Peter Walker with support from John Fairhurst and Olivia Moore
Friday 25th April, 8pm
St Margarets Church, Whalley Range, Manchester, M16 8AE

Finally touring again after nearly 40 years of quietly working damn hard on his playing, Peter Walker comes to Manchester. Truly a Godfather psyche raga flamenco and folk. He studied with Ravi Shankar and Ali Akhbar Khan, travelled to Franco era Spain to study flamenco and jam with the gypsies and was at the heart of the San Fran acoustic scene.

Don’t for a minute let your mind wander to the watered down come-backs of some of his contemporaries; Peter has just matured and improved, developing his passion for flamenco. A rare opportunity this is, to encounter a player of Peter's influence and excellence.

In support are two local musicians, descendants in a musical family tree.

John Fairhurst has travelled extensively with his guitar, playing everywhere and anywhere with allsorts of people. A heavy Raga influence, with elements of gypsy jazz, a big spoonful of blues and psyche folk.

Olivia Moore, a truly gifted violinist, has herself travelled to India on numerous occasions to study. After many years playing classical violin, she delved into the worlds of jazz, flamenco, Cuban music and improvisation.
Awesome!

Therefore the full line up is now

Napoleon IIIrd

"Napoleon IIIrd is possibly the most visionary solo artist on the planet at this moment in time....the most striking aspect of Napoleon IIIrd’s set is the huge propensity of sound one single man can make. Shut your eyes for a second and you’d expect the stage to be filled by some 12-piece orchestra." Drowned in Sound

FRIDAY 4th April at Cafe Saki

Itch

"Itch are quite breathtakingly, pant-twitchingly awesome. Songs stop, start, fall over themselves, kick themselves up the arse, explode into cataclysmic bursts of energybefore suddenly veering off into seemingly irreconcilable tangents that seamlessyly reconcile themselves within the space of a few minutes"

Arms At Last

"Arms At Last sound like what would happen if Dartz! and Hot Club De Paris had an affair." FuckingDance. blogspot. com

The Search Map

’Glitch ridden intelli pop of the highest order - like TV On The Radio playing Modest Mouse at their tenderest’ - Subba-Cultcha

My Amiga

Plenty of harmonies, hand claps and guitar taps make for another band to add to the list of super fun bands being produced in Liverpool at the moment.
