Perry Dripps and Spike Currier played guitar and piano for many years together growing up on the island of Martha's Vineyard. In 2002, Adam showed up and took over on the keys and Spike switched over to bass with no previous experience as a bass player. Together, they combined a whole range of styles as a result of the band's many different music influences. Jake Nochimow, who went to school with Perry at the time, was contacted three days before a concert to play drums for the band for a gig at the Hot Tin Roof, a nightclub on the island of Martha's Vineyard (now known as Outerland), which is homebase for three of the four band members.
In those three days, the band wrote their first five songs and felt really good about the material that was being created. "We just play really well together and have a lot of fun," the band members have said many times. If we feel good about the material, then hopefully someone else will as well. It was during those few days that the name "the Pink Socks" arose.
Jake and Perry were still off at school together and began to play while Adam and Spike held down the fort at home. The fact that each member of the band had very different music influences allowed not only for the creation of something new and unique, but also for a sound that seemed to appeal to a broad range of people. The band played several concerts on the island and around Cape Cod over the summer of 2005 and also promoted their new EP, "Seeing Stars." The EP was created in the Little Dripps studio on the Vineyard and the drum tracks were recorded at 88.5 WWTA radio station and at the Tabor Academy music department in Marion, MA. Everything was recorded on a very basic digital 12 track recorder over the course of several months and was then finally mixed down again on the Vineyard months later.
Throughout the winter of 2006, the band played several concerts, including a New Years Eve show at the Kathrine Cornell theatre and at the annual Springfest music festival. However, the fact that none of the members lived close together proved to put a damper on a lot of performances. Although, they did promote their new EP and were able to establish a small following on Marthas Vineyard.
The band recorded their first full length album at Hampshire College in February of 2006 during a snowstorm and ended up getting snowed in for several days. They are still anticipating the completion of the album, which is now being remastered in a small film company studio in Boston. They will be playing gigs on Martha's Vineyard and in the Boston area throughout the next few months.
The band is constantly changing directions, always trying to find something completely new and pleasing to the ears, while also trying to write songs that will get stuck in your head at the end of the night. In their most recent gig, they performed with all-state jazz alto saxophonist Tyler Mehegan and they have plans of performing with him again in the near future. Although not posted yet, the band will have a few more concerts in August so be sure to keep checking this site. The band loves feedback about their music so feel free say what you think about it.
