Plain Recordings was founded with the release of Cat Power's first album, Dear Sir. Since then, the label has gone on to release albums by a variety of artists as well as two tribute compilations and several vinyl reissues of classic albums.
Among the albums that Plain has reissued on vinyl are My Bloody Valentine's seminal LP's, Isn't Anything and Loveless, Nicolai Dunger's Vinyl Trilogy, Primal Scream's Screamadelica, the first four albums by The Flaming Lips, and Twilight Singer's Blackberry Belle.
The label has released two amazing tributes to two incredible films, Monte Hellman’s Two-Lane Blacktop and Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up. Contributing to these albums is a who's who of the indie and avant-garde music world including Calexico, Sonic Youth, Mark Eitzel, Cat Power, Giant Sand, Wilco, Matmos, Sun City Girls, Richard Youngs, and many others.
Active artists on Plain Recordings:
The Moore Brothers are a folk-pop duo from the Bay Area who meld the English folk sound of Martin Carthy, the pathos of acoustic Big Star, and the sweet harmonies of Simon and Garfunkel. Their song-writing is one of a kind and there's still more great music to come.
Octet are a French electronic pop duo in the vein of Air and Phoenix, but with a funkier side that belies a serious Prince influence. The group have remixed a song from Beck's last album and are continuing to win fans over on both sides of the Atlantic.
Wingdale Community Singers is a tower of song-writing talent. The three members are all very highly regarded figures: Rick Moody is the acclaimed author of The Ice Storm, Demonology, Purple America, and the newly released The Diviners; Hannah Marcus is a highly revered songwriter who, in addition to releasing several excellent solo albums, has recently collaborated with Godspeed! You Black Emperor; David Grubbs hardly needs an introduction, having co-founded Bastro and Gastr Del Sol, as well as recording several solo albums and collaborating with the likes of Will Oldham, Red Krayola, Matmos, and The Dirty Three.
