pow wow! live @ Northside Festival (Battering Room Showcase @ Bar Matchless) - Courtesy Pop Tarts Suck Toasted
..Think of a living jukebox. of songs you haven't yet heard but have been longing to hear. think of them as love. for pop music long gone and pop music yet to be created. think blue suede shoes and outerspace.
in comes pow wow! the brainchild of the nazareno brothers. Originally from the suburbs of jersey and currently based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, they have been writing and playing music relentlessly for the past 11 years. However, it was only 3 years ago that the two decided to consolidate their aspirations and form a group together: pow wow!
They are new. fresh. and sexy. Their tunes are infectious and subversively charming, whispering romance and promiscuity; love and apathy... often in the same breath. All the while never forgetting to poke fun at the lemons life hands us. the awkward moments. the compromising situations. conversational songs for the electronic generation.
From neon colored disco beats to country tinged twang, the group prides itself in being a chameleon of sorts, drawing from the past 60 years of international pop music, and following a lineage of "march to their own beat type of bands" such as the kinks, sparks, the pastels and the smiths.
It was a busy first half of 2009 for Brooklyn-based indie-pop quartet Pow Wow!, as the band—led by brothers Edward and Jeff Nazareno—took to playing what seemed like every small rock club and D.I.Y. space in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. Thanks to a sunny, lo-fi-leaning sound that falls halfway between The Beatles and Beat Happening, the group should enjoy an equally busy second half of the year. With MP3s floating around but a proper piece of vinyl still in the works, Pow Wow! is probably, at least for now, best sampled live—especially at the sweaty height of summer, when its wistful yet energetic tunes should really come alive.
It doesn’t hurt that their laid-back garage pop gathers all the heavy hitters under one roof—the Velvet Underground, the Magnetic Fields, the Strokes—searing the rough edges with sun-splashed melodies that beg you to dance. Between Eddie Nazareno's worn-in vocals and the simple, plodding song structures, their music feels timeless. And for this, bloggers prone to prematurely slap on an “over-hyped” label better brace themselves for what’s likely to escalate into full-blown, downright buzz.
Few bands outwardly claim “purity” is what they’re after; instead it seems easier to find bands from the suburbs ending up in Brooklyn seeking an extended adolesence. Take Brooklyn’s pow wow!, one of L Magazine’s “8 NYC Bands You Have To Hear.” This is a band of two brothers from the Jersey suburbs making “charming” pop rock music. Reviewers compare pow wow! to the sunny ennui of Belle and Sebastian and straightforwardness of Modern Lovers–both supreme pop acts, both credited with capturing a pure and simple sound. pow wow! and many other bands like it in Brooklyn are on the same track–to extend youth through music and try to reconcile our middle-class entitlement in a city that is both high culture and stricken with every social hardship.
" They play indie-pop that borrows from much more than the fuzzed-out 80s and early-90s fare that's so popular all over the city these days, managing to avoid the "revivalist" tag with just enough hints of the Velvet Underground, Modern Lovers and Magnetic Fields. The melodies are non-stop, the vibe laid-back but somehow menacing and sunny at the same time, and the harmonies lift the whole thing to a new level. "
...something I’d liken to The Modern Lovers if they replaced their pre-punk edge with a dose of sunny day Belle and Sebastian ennui. I feel like an ass for writing that, but it’s true. And it’s meant to tell you that pow wow! is a band you should keep your eyes on.
The bond between brothers can be a tumultuous one, but the musical fruits are plentiful. Just ask the Kinks' Davies brothers, the Greenwoods of Radiohead or the National, who can claim two sets of brothers. This grand tradition extends to Brooklyn-via-Jersey siblings Edward and Jeff Nazareno, who perform under the moniker pow wow! The two have been playing music independently for more than 11 years, but only decided to join forces three years ago. And starting last year, they began to record and produce a string of poppy gems in their Brooklyn studio.
Adopting some of the best sonic elements of the last half century, pow wow! have a studied timelessness. Slurred vocals echo Spoon's Britt Daniel, which perfectly pair with the songs' apathetic take on love and romance. The song "23 19" has the meandering guitar riffs and vocal delivery of the Velvet Underground, while "You Can Take Me" could be a '70s soft rock standard.
on pow wow! live @ cameo:
The band played an excellent, entertaining show, with lots of scrappy energy that had everyone moving. They seemed to be having fun and that rubbed off on the audience in a big way. As we listened to them live, we realized the singer’s voice reminded us a little bit of Hamilton Leithauser’s. And while there are definitely some similarities to the Walkmen, pow wow! may more closely resemble Leithauser’s previous band, the Recoys, with their rawness and less world-weary stance.
On 04/2 @ Cameo
Greenpoint-via-Jersey combo pow wow!, meanwhile, are currently in the midst of making an all-out assault on NYC's popscene. I've been digging their recordings (most of which you can download for free) but this is the first time I've actually seen them play. Like a party band version of The Strokes (or maybe a less laid back Little Joy) are the kind of band you wish would play at Ruby's in Coney Island every summer weekend. Though their recordings are decidely low-fi, live you can tell they've got straight-up pop ambitions, with a soulful streak that rears its head with a shambly cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," a ballsy move but one they actually pull off. The crowd are already converts, dancing, and at one point forming an ad-hoc chorus line. Thank god for cheap PBR.
...The songs are poppy and rather lovely, blending sixties influences with lo-fi melodies, influenced by The Kinks, The Pastels and Smiths. Highly recommended, don't miss it!!!
...pow wow!, have been quietly working together on their upbeat tunes for 3 years. The songs pull together disperate infuences that showcase the brothers’ enthusiasm for a wide variety of pop music. Their track “So Weird” has been on repeat all afternoon, making a nice companion on an unusually sunny February afternoon.
on "Still Only You":
Acoustic Guitar brings forth the image of a campfire billowing out of a trash can, a remarkable juxtoposition of past and present, with little hint of the future. A reminder to live in the moment? Or just coincidence? The powerful imagery contained within this song by Brooklyn band pow wow! is matched only by it’s tunefulness. I whistle in the dark like a madman.
...I don't know a whole lot about Greenpoint-via-Jersey band Pow Wow! besides what Ive gleaned from their MySpace. Basically a duo of brothers Edward and Jeff Nazareno, the two have been writing together for about three years but only began releasing music last year. And most of it is pretty catchy stuff. The band list Burt Bacharach and The Smiths as influences but their songs are in a similar, laid-back vibe to the Little Joy record.
Pow Wow! cleverly infuses The Kinks, The Smiths, The Pastels, and even Burt Bacharach into music that often sounds both cheerful and cynical at the same time. “My House Your House Mine” is a stand-out track centered on a laid back yet catchy guitar riff and sugar-sweet melody that almost forces you to hit repeat. And the best part is, Pow Wow! is offering their complete discography as a free download through their blog. Download your copies quick before this up and coming band is signed by a top notch label and their music ends up on the overpriced soundtrack of a style over substance indie film starring Natalie Portman.
Well, they certainly got the punctuation down. And Brooklyn's pow wow! have the point (with lower-case action, no less!) and the lo-fi guitar/synth pop goodness that just might capture them some of that elusive buzz...
...Above all, Pow Wow! is a fresh and unique sound distinct from any other band playing in the greater Manhattan area. They will have you looking behind you for your soul, and looking ahead for the sound.
The Pastels, The Smiths, The Kinks... Llevan un tiempo autoeditándose singles como el que nos ocupa, que es el último editado, el cual puedes oír y descargar gratuitamente desde su página/blog oficial: Pow Wow, a website of shorts. Gracias por invitarnos a conocer vuestro material !!

well i don't love you guys but you are good and i wouldn't mind hearing more. you shouldn't start people off with such great expectations because anything short of usually sucks. Try something just short of negative so it sounds amazing. you kind of remind me of the magic numbers a bit. best of luck.
