Remember your question about software? There are plenty of applications that can generate drum and percussion sounds for you but for best results you still need a hardware controller to hit so you trigger them. I have never heard of a percussionist using a mouse :)
So, if you want to go this route, you need two things: the software and hardware. There are plenty of options but I really like the new Alesis ControlPad because of the following:
It connects via USB no messing about with MIDI cables. It is also a stand alone instrument with an internal bank of sounds. You can carry it around under your arm. It’s big enough to hit the S~~t out of it.
