Project 6 Pack
1980 Dodge D50 PickupMini-truckers are comparable to one big dysfunctional family. When this 1980 D-50, a former cover vehicle in Minitruckin’ magazine, was found wasting away…nothing but a six pack and mad mini-trucker love would rescue it. And so Project Six Pack was born.
During the extensive rebuild, the frame was replaced from the doors forward with Mustang II control arms and brakes, with an S-10 gas door in the dash for checking the master cylinder. Project Six Pack steers from the right side with a rack and pinion setup.
The rear suspension sports a triangulated 8 link setup with four sleeve bags, filled by four Air Zenith compressors, fill the pockets that were created in the frame for clearance. Project Six Pack’s rear-end was rebuilt as well, now housing 3:11 gears.
A carbureted 1996 LT1 motor gave Project Six Pack new life, with a rebuilt turbo 350 that sees to the shifting of the old Dodge. The motor has been blacked out, including all hoses and wiring. The engine is accessorized by a Caddy air cleaner and Oldsmobile Rocket valve covers.
A Toyota Nissan hybrid bumper from Grant Kustoms serves as the D-50’s front bumper. A combo tailgate skin from Grant was used on the rear. The roof of Project Six Pack was removed, to let the light shine in. The doors, the hood, cowl, firewall, dash and tailgate were all shaved. A 31” LED light bar was cut into the tailgate along with a license plate lifter.
The bed of the Dodge holds enough Kicker equipment to produce a concert, and any extra space is filled by the four Air Zenith compressors and an 8 foot Dyno Roadster bicycle sporting 26” wheels of its own.
Project Six Pack, now complete, has earned, for the second time, a seat at the head of the mini-truck family reunion table. The D-50 proves that cover trucks don’t die…they just need some love from the family and a six pack – or two.
