purple ivy shadows were formed in september 1991 by chris daltry and andrew nimmo who had previously played together in a richmond, virginia band called dream of day with ian schlein (Musical Chairs) and the band name purple ivy shadows actually comes from a dream of day song of that title. chris daltry and andy nimmo soon began playing with erik carlson in charlottesville, virginia as purple ivy shadows, and later added bassist john hong. the quartet moved to nyc together in early 1992 and soon became part of the new england indie pop scene, leading to 7" releases with my pal god and spinart records, as well as a uk-only 12" release on the watercolour label. some of these songs were recorded in providence, rhode island by david auchenbach of small factory. purple ivy shadows also played the 1992 providence indie pop festival along with all the great bands of the era. in 1993 bassist john hong and drummer andy nimmo both left the band to return to uva for graduate school - but daltry and carlson kept the band alive and soon relocated to providence where they continued to play with a somewhat revolving lineup until finally calling it quits in 2002 after releasing 4 full-length records (slow river/ryko, krave, handsome, dark beloved cloud), 2 ep's (watercolour, slow river/ryko), several 7" singles (my pal god, spinart, zero hour) and appeared on countless compilations worldwide. chris daltry now heads a band called the 'mericans and erik carlson performs and records as area c (both still based out of providence, rhode island). the band is currently not active, but this posting has been created as a forum for fans to contact the band - or talk about the band, as well as an outlet for posting unreleased / out of print songs, as well as a place to post unpublished photos and what-not. Howdy! Brought a homemade PIS mix (Ancestral, Pawtucket, Dancefloor, Oh My Word, Get Your Hair, Feeble, Saw the Fish, Roadwise, Sustance, No Health, It's Under/OK, Dancefloor acoustic, Under & OK, In South, Along, Favorite, Steal, Water, Garden) on 10-day roadtrip, and it actually kept Spouse Who Hates Long Car Rides happy. Gentlemen, you're my heroes of the week :)
according to the "plays count" on i tunes, "Ladderback" has been played 47 times in the last year, "Stay Up To Stray" 45 times. And that doesn't even begin to count all the times I've listened to Field Guide in its entirety on the cd player, in the car, in my head. Just thought you should know...
Hi from Glasgow and thanks for stopping by, we really like the sound of your stuff, "Never Lonely Alone" is a beauty... and look out for our new record, coming soon!
You spoil us with all the music you've posted here. C'mon... let's have it! Preferably the Peters Era stuff. Oh well... guess I'll have to break out my vinyl for a fix. Then maybe head over to the 'Mericans site (good stuff; Chris's grandfather would be proud). Hope you're all doing well, wherever you lay heads tonight.
