BLACK FLAG Damaged LP
It is Damaged that is most often hailed as BLACK FLAG’s—and American punk’s—masterpiece. Black Flag, often regarded as the first American hardcore band, was plagued by lineup changes, litigation, and a reputation for violent live shows throughout its more than 10 year history. However, many critics also recognize the band’s diverse discography and prolific output as a testament to its superior musicianship and abilty to continuously evolve. The name “Black Flag,” suggested by Raymond Pettibon (guitarist and founding member Greg Ginn’s brother), was intended to conjure the idea of both the anarchist symbol and the insect spray. Pettibon, in addition to his short stint as bass player in the band, conceived the stylized flag logo—a design created from of a series of four black bars. As pioneers of a then burgeoning DIY aesthetic in the punk community, Black Flag understood the importance of spreading its message to the masses. Using spray paint, the band members canvassed Los Angeles with their iconic flag logo—an action that attracted the attention of potental listeners as well as local police. Damaged—featuring classic tracks like “TV Party,” “Six Pack,” and “Rise Above”—is considered by many to be the quintessential Black Flag album.

My War was the most adventurous punk rock album of its time, and it says a lot about the state of American punk in 1984 when you consider that it was hated almost universally. It is only when a band loses total regard for outside opinions that it begins to grow, and My War is one of the most scathing, unflinching portraits of growth ever documented.

Live at The Whiskey 77. We are seldom lucky enough to hear one of our favorite bands at the earliest state of development. In the case of the Germs, Los Angeles' most radical punk band, someone was fortunately on hand with a remote 8-track studio to record their very first gig. Part of Kim Fowley's 1977 "Punk Rock Weekend" at the Whiskey a Go Go, it's a rough, honest, eye-opening set, showing the Germs as they really were. Originally released in a limited vinyl edition in 1980, Germicide quickly went out of print, then was issued cassette-only by ROIR. THE GERMS Forming/Sex Boy 7"
The first single, Forming, was recorded on a Sony 2-track in Pat Smear's garage and arrived back from the pressing plant with the note, "Warning: This record causes ear cancer" printed on the sleeve by the plant staff, much to the band's displeasure. It features a shambolic but serviceable performance on the A-side and a muddy live recording of Sexboy on the B side, recorded at the Roxy for the Cheech and Chong movie, Up In Smoke. The song was not used in the movie, nor was the band, the only band not to receive a call-back to perform live for the film's "Battle of the Bands" sequence, perhaps due to the fact that the Germs' chaotic Roxy performance had featured an unscripted, full-on food fight. Any and all expectations (and from me there were many) have been exceeded. This is easily the best sludge album so far this year. BRAINOIL are maniacal riff merchants. The sound waves they create literally have a tangible and physical presence, you more than hear them; you feel them. Hell, you can almost taste them and smell them. More driving and rapid (all things being relative) than most of their tar coated peers, BRAINOIL are likely to have a broader appeal than most bands of their breed. Los reyes del Crust Punk sueco! Total Fuckin' Brutalized is a combination of Driller Killer's first two albums "Total Fucking Hate" and "Brutalize". There is a very prominent old Swedish hardcore sound melded with old crust similar to Doom and Extinction of Mankind. The production itself is very different from their other albums, most noticeably the grainier, raw sounding guitar and drums. By no means does this deteriorate from the overall sound, but complements the classic hardcore/crust style that Driller Killer plays. Plus, there's a badass fucking video on this disc that made me cry. DRILLER KILLER Fuck The World CD These guys are really hard to categorize. There's aspects of metal, punk, crust, hardcore, thrash and all that good stuff. I'd definitely say that thrash, punk, and metal dominate. One consistency across the board is that scent of Swedish background and influence you get from good Scandinavian bands. I would definitely say Fuck The World is very comparable to Disrupt or even Doom. Album from 1997!.....5€
DRILLER KILLER Reality Bites CD Reality Bites is Driller Killer's fourth full length and has a noticeable style alteration from their release prior to this, Fuck The World, mainly because there seems to be a lot more mid-tempo beats. The fast stuff is still comparable to Disrupt or Doom, but with more thrash / speed metal oriented riffs than Fuck The World. Think D.R.I. or even early 80s Metallica. At the same time, some of the mid-tempo songs remind me of old crust in the category of Extinction of Mankind or maybe even some crusty grind riffage akin to Rotten Sound without the blast beats. Also on this Cd is what I Think might be the best Rise Above cover song I have heard yet. I wouldn't say that Driller Killer has all out changed their style on this album,I'd say progression is a better word. Either way, this album is great in that it combines an assload of different genres and doesn't just pull it off, but fucking owns it. From 1998.....5.00€

Thick metal-edged guitars backed by punishing d-beat drumming and extremely harsh low-end vocals courtesy of the bands founder. This album continues to deal out their own brand of raw aggression laced with the harsh realities of life. Pissed off is an understatement...Shit, I just found a new reason that I love these guys. I put the And The Winner Is... cd in my computer to rip the songs, and when I opened the folder, the song titles were all changed. Track 1 Man Overbored comes up as Lion King-Can You Feel The Love Tonight, Track 6 Sliced comes up as The Little Mermaid-Under The Sea, etc. Fucking hilarious. As for the music on this album itself, it is fucking awesome. There's a good mix between simple punk influenced riffing and metal driven breakdowns and solos that the album from becoming too ambient! DRILLER KILLER Cold, Cheap & Disconnected CD This is Driller Killer's sixth full length and it follows the progression that you see in their style when comparing albums not to mention the high levels of kickassitude. This album sticks with their metal infused Scandinavian hardcore sound that their known for as is expected. What really separates this album from the others is that it leans more towards that metal side. More complex fills and solos pull it further away from being thrown in with other hardcore bands. Basically, if you like other Driller Killer releases you're not going to be disappointed by any means. If you haven't heard them but like hardcore or even metal fucking get this. Plus, this album has the most badass Joan Jett cover I have ever heard. From 2002.....5.00 €
DRILLER KILLER The 4Q Mangrenade CD The 4Q Mangrenade is Driller Killer's latest album and is consistent with their sound as of late. I found it to be quite reminiscent of Reality Bites and Cold Cheap and Disconnected. At the same time this album pulls away from their sound on the last two albums, taking Swedish hardcore in a new direction. As I've said before, Driller Killer's sound is constantly progressing from album to album. Every time I got my hands on the next Driller Killer album I listened to it with expectations that ended up being way below what I actually heard. Get this!.....5.00 €

Cleveland Ohio's H-100's blast out crucial early 80's style raw thrash. The singer was a teenage kid with a really snotty voice. The rest of the band were thirty-year-old record collector dudes who were there when hardcore ruled and didn't forget. Although the H-100's claim 80's Japanese thrash as their main influence this record reminds more of early Poison Idea, Toxic Reasons or many other Midwestern thrash bands of the 80's. Pro-wrestling is a big influence on this band as evidenced by the cover. H-100's were notorious for their outrageous live shows which usually featured fireworks, wrestling moves and throwing everything that wasn't nailed down. In fact the whole Clevo Chaos Schtick really started with these guys. The music just screams Chaos and Destruction at top volume. A much heavier version of CHARLES BRONSON!
