Hailed as "four recorder virtuosos" by The New York Times, the recorder collective QNG - Quartet New Generation is dedicated to contemporary music and collaborations with emerging composers from around the world, confirming to audiences worldwide the recorder's relevance as a modern classical instrument. The quartet's unique high-energy mode of performance inspires new works and creates a dynamic and exciting forum for exploring the music of our time.
Performing on upwards of twenty recorders of varying sizes and shapes during the course of a typical performance, the quartet also firmly believes that early music can be seen as new when juxtaposed with contemporary works. This innovative style of programming combined with QNG's mesmerizing stage presence has attracted broad and enthusiastic audiences throughout Europe, North and South America.
Captivated by the diverse range and flexibility of the recorder family, QNG is constantly searching for new possibilities of sound and expression. The instruments played by the collective include a substantial number of accurate copies of authentic historical instruments plus modern recorders including square box-like recorders called Paetzoldbasses.
In March 2004, QNG was awarded First Prize at the 2004 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, as well as the Victor and Sono Elmaleh Prize, a new video/recording prize, and numerous performance prize engagements throughout North America. QNG - Quartet New Generation was founded in September 1998 by four recorder players who met during their studies at the Amsterdam Conservatoire and the University of the Arts, Berlin. In 2003 the collective was also awarded top prize at the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition for Contemporary Music in the Netherlands, the International Chamber Music Competition for Contemporary Music in Poland and the "Concours International de Musique de Chambre" in France.
