About me: Interested in jazz and R&B from a young age, I became a professional musician at the age of 16 when I joined Ken Mackintosh's Band. My early influences drew me towards the great big bands and the exciting groove tradition that came out of New York in the early 1970’s and by the age of 14 I was checking out Sonny Payne, Jo Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobb, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones. My attraction to funk and R & B music brought strong influences from Bernard Purdie, David Garibaldi, Billy Cobham and my greatest influence, Steve Gadd. I started freelancing around London while studying classical percussion at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where I was awarded the Philip Jones Percussion Prize for my final recital in 1986. I've has been nominated for the British Jazz Awards three times, winning the Best drummer category in 2006 and been twice ranked top ten Studio Drummer in Rhythm Magazine Readers Polls. I won the 2003 Reader’s Poll Studio Category at Mike Dolbear.com and was nominated for the 2007 Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards..........................................................................................................................
After leaving college, I continued freelance work around London working regularly with The John Etheridge Quartet and Bertice Reading, and at London’s Bass Clef club, where I led my own trio for two years, working alongside young talents Jason Rebello, Pete Saberton and David Hartley amongst others. More work took me into the West End where I was deputy for over twenty five shows and it was at this time that studio dates began to come in marking the beginning of a studio career...............................................................
In the early 1990’s, I toured and recorded with Everything But The Girl, recording alongside Vinnie Colaiuta on their “Worldwide” album. In ‘93, I spent time on the road with Kirk Whalum opening for Whitney Houston. In ‘94, I worked with the Count Basie Orchestra and was invited back for two tours with the band. From ’95 to’99, I was a band mate of James Brown alumni Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis in Van Morrison’s band, with whom I toured for four years recording three albums: “How Long Has This Been Going On?” ” Tell Me Something” and “The Healing Game”. I was an original member of Guy Barker’s International Quintet recording the Mercury Music Prize-nominated “Into The Blue” and “Timeswing” for Verve Records. I've spent time in various groups including The Dankworth Generation Band, Laurie Johnson’s London Big Band, The Brian Dee Trio, Kenny Baker’s Dozen, Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames and The Tim Garland/Gerard Presencer Quintet......................................................................................................................
