   Ralph Salmins's Blurbs
About me:
Interested in jazz and R&B from a young age, I became a professional musician at the age of 16 when I joined Ken Mackintosh's Band. My early influences drew me towards the great big bands and the exciting groove tradition that came out of New York in the early 1970’s and by the age of 14 I was checking out Sonny Payne, Jo Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobb, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones. My attraction to funk and R & B music brought strong influences from Bernard Purdie, David Garibaldi, Billy Cobham and my greatest influence, Steve Gadd. I started freelancing around London while studying classical percussion at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where I was awarded the Philip Jones Percussion Prize for my final recital in 1986. I've has been nominated for the British Jazz Awards three times, winning the Best drummer category in 2006 and been twice ranked top ten Studio Drummer in Rhythm Magazine Readers Polls. I won the 2003 Reader’s Poll Studio Category at Mike Dolbear.com and was nominated for the 2007 Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards.......................................................................................................................... After leaving college, I continued freelance work around London working regularly with The John Etheridge Quartet and Bertice Reading, and at London’s Bass Clef club, where I led my own trio for two years, working alongside young talents Jason Rebello, Pete Saberton and David Hartley amongst others. More work took me into the West End where I was deputy for over twenty five shows and it was at this time that studio dates began to come in marking the beginning of a studio career............................................................... In the early 1990’s, I toured and recorded with Everything But The Girl, recording alongside Vinnie Colaiuta on their “Worldwide” album. In ‘93, I spent time on the road with Kirk Whalum opening for Whitney Houston. In ‘94, I worked with the Count Basie Orchestra and was invited back for two tours with the band. From ’95 to’99, I was a band mate of James Brown alumni Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis in Van Morrison’s band, with whom I toured for four years recording three albums: “How Long Has This Been Going On?” ” Tell Me Something” and “The Healing Game”. I was an original member of Guy Barker’s International Quintet recording the Mercury Music Prize-nominated “Into The Blue” and “Timeswing” for Verve Records. I've spent time in various groups including The Dankworth Generation Band, Laurie Johnson’s London Big Band, The Brian Dee Trio, Kenny Baker’s Dozen, Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames and The Tim Garland/Gerard Presencer Quintet...................................................................................................................... Artists I've worked with live or in the studio include Madonna, Tori Amos, Macy Gray, Alanis Morisette, Sheryl Crow, Kelly Rowlands, Celine Dion, John Williams, Elton John, Mike Oldfield , George Martin, Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello, Gloria Estefan, Tom Jones, Michel Legrand, Diana Ross, Oleta Adams, Mose Allison, Burt Bacharach, Michael Bolton, Charlie Byrd, Paul Carrack, Gene Chandler, Michel Colombier, Gene Connors, Elvis Costello, Hank Crawford, Herb Ellis, Gloria Estefan, Jon Faddis, Gloria Gaynor, Gene Harris, Jon Hendricks, Chuck Jackson, Chaka Khan, Cleo Laine, Joe Lovano, Mark Murphy, Annie Ross, Gunter Schuller, Sounds Of Blackness, Jimmy Witherspoon, Deniece Williams, Mose Allison, James Carter, Hank Crawford, Teddy Edwards, Herb Ellis, Jon Faddis, Art Farmer, Herb Geller, The Go Jazz All-Stars, Scott Hamilton, Gene Harris, Vincent Herring, Red Holloway, Julian Joseph, Peter King, Cleo Laine, John Lewis, Joe Lovano, Mundell Lowe, Don Lusher, Marian McPartland, Charles McPherson, George Masso, James Moody, Dick Morrissey, Bheki Mseleku, Jim Mullen, Mark Murphy, Ken Peplowski, Irene Reid, Annie Ross, Bobby Shew, Ben Sidran, Louis Stewart, Byron Stripling, Ralph Sutton, Lew Tabackin, Martin Taylor, Stan Tracey, Warren Vache, Bobby Watson, Bobby Wellins, Bob Wilbur, Jimmy Witherspoon, Joe Williams, Roy Williams, Shola Ama, Clay Aiken, Howard Alden, Larry Adler, Dot Allison, Peter Appleyard, Peter Asher, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Michael Ball, Iain Ballamy, Antonio Banderas, HP Barnum, John Barry, BBC Big Band, Elmer Bernstein, Leonard Bernstein, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Stanley Black, Michael Bolton, Chris Botti, Sarah Brightman, Chris Brubeck, Michael Buble, Emma Bunton, Charlie Byrd, Ali Campbell, Ian Carr, Mike Carr, Paul Carrack, James Carter, Gene Chandler, Deepak Chopra, Petula Clark, Glenn Close, Gene Connors, Steve Coogan, Alice Cooper, Elvis Costello, The Count Basie Orchestra, Hank Crawford, Kid Creole, John Dankworth, Darius, Craig David, Carl Davis, Ray Davies, Sacha Distel, David Dundas, John Du Prez, Bob Dylan, Kyle Eastwood, Randy Edelman, Teddy Edwards, Danny Elfman, Cliff Eidelman, The English Chamber Orchestra, The Escoffrey Sisters, The Everley Brothers, Tal Farlow, Jose Feliciano, Mike Figgis, Renee Fleming, Mo Foster, The Four Tops, James Galway, Lesley Garrett, Gareth Gates, Gloria Gaynor, Bob Geldof, Boy George, Evelyn Glennie, Jerry Goldsmith, Vivian Green, Josh Groban, Marty Grosz, Tony Hadley, Lynden David Hall, Scott Hamilton, Paul Hart, Heaven 17, Barbara Hendricks, Jon Hendricks, Chrissie Hind, Red Holloway, Trevor Horn, John Horler, Hotei, Mick Hucknell, Engelbert Humperdinck, Chris Isaak, Mark Isham, Chuck Jackson, Yvonne Jackson, Herb Jefferies, Aled Jones, Oliver Jones, Salena Jones, Tom Jones, Michael Kamen, Kiri Te Kanawa, Ronan Keating, Brian Kennedy, Gerard Kenny, Nicole Kidman, Tony Kinsey, Kevin Kline, The KPM All-Stars, Robert Kraft, Alison Krauss, Kumiko Yamashita, Duncan Lamont, Donna Lewis, Jerry Lewis, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Julian Lloyd-Webber, The London Chamber Orchestra, London Community Gospel Choir, The London Philharmonic Orch., The London Sinfonietta, The London Symphony Orch., Loose Tubes, Giles Martin, Victor Manuel, Ralph McTell, Johnny Mathis, Mike Flowers Pops, Nana Mouskouri, Alison Moyet, New London Chorale, Jessye Norman, Nu Colours, Ola, Donny Osmond, Elaine Page, Mica Paris, Ken Peplowski, The Philharmonia Orchestra, The Pizza Express All-Stars, Jonathan Pryce, Pyewackett, Phil Ramone, Eddie Reader, Cliff Richard, Irene Reid, Carlos Rios, Tom Robinson, Ronnie Ross, Ray Russell, Maaya Sakamoto, Randy Santke, Leo Sayer, S Club Juniors, John Scott, Howard Shore, Ben Sidran, Sika, The Spice Girls, Lisa Stansfield, Jim Steinman, Louis Stewart, Hamish Stuart, Andy Summers, Ralph Sutton, Tommy Steele, Swing Out Sister, Bill Tarmey, Clare Teal, The Three Degrees, Tindersticks, Stan Tracey, Bonnie Tyler, Warren Vache, Rui Veloso, Terry Venables, Scott Walker, Stephen Warbeck, Elizabeth Welch, Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, Tim Whitehead, Debbie Wiseman, John Williams(Guitarist), John Williams(Composer), Eric Woolfson, Yazz and Will Young.........................................................................
