who are rawkas?
Way Back in the summer of 1996, a group of school friends got together in a garage and began something that would eventually evolve into one of the most exciting, hardworking and popular rock covers bands on the pub live music scene: Rawkas.
With close to 1000 live performances and five C.D.s under their belt and their own brand of aggression fuelled, energy driven power rock revitalising songs made famous by other artists, the band still manages both to excite with and be excited by their live shows.
While the band have built up a strong reputation for their presence and energy on stage, they are equally well respected for their outstanding level of musicianship:
Lead vocalist Miguel Angelo's voice, at times tonally reminiscent of a blend of Axel Rose and AC/DC's Brian Johnson, can soar upwards to what seems almost the limit of human hearing whilst remaining powerful and warm.
Guitarist Phil Murphy, who is also a qualified guitar tutor, is a highly accomplished musician. His speciality fusion of blues and hard rock styles supplemented by an ability to play very competently in almost any style, gives him a sound all his own.
Galla Durrant, the band's other guitarist, is quite simply a lightening fast shredmeister of the highest calibre straight from the Zakk Wylde school of super quick licks. A one trick pony however he is not - although the youngest member of the band he still manages to play with a feel many older and more experienced guitarists would die for.
Richard 'Dik' Pain, resident bass monster with the band for the first 6 years and again since March '05 is a bass player that demands attention on stage. Where many bassists will settle back into the mix content merely to thicken up the overall sound he can at times thrusts the bass into the foreground with his intricate funk edged bass lines and trademark killer bass tone.
Percussionist Stuart Robertson is undoubtedly one of the most exceptional drummers on the scene today. His thunderous double kick drum technique is just one tool in the arsenal he uses to create his swirling vortex of drum patterns, simultaneously powering the band forward and holding it all tightly together.
As stand alone musicians these five all stand out in their field but it is their tightness and coherency when they play as a unit that is so impressive. Few bands ever lock in as tightly and have such an awareness of each other on stage as these guys, which, when combined with all the above makes a Rawkas gig one hell of an experience.
If you have yet to experience the magic of Rawkas live or even if you have, just check out the gig list to find out when they're next at a venue near you. Rawkas make a great live act for any occasion and have the equipment to suit all ranges of venues. If you are looking to book a professional rock band look no further.
