Influences
The personal is political. Rhea's Obsession is a community, we are part of all of you. An artist has a responsibility to be original. If we are simply repeating what has already been explicitly done, why would we waste everyone's time? We blend extremes, and bypass genres. Art of all natures influences us: film, nature, the political world, the spiritual-emotional world, Goddesses, Gods and demons. Anything that exudes passion, fire, intensity. (We believe there are two kinds of music: good and bad. This is to say there are no genres outside our listening realm. Music we listen to includes Maria Callas, Scottish, South Asian Drone, Killing Joke, Henryk Goreki, Sepultura, Sigur Ros, Coltrane, Fred Frith, The Swans, Miles, Neubaten, Hedningarna, Prong, Indian classical, Trio Bulgarka, Diamanda Galas, and on and on)
Sounds Like
Tribal. Organic. Ritualistic. Drone. Rhythmic. Light. Dark. Mesmerising. Sensual.
People have said Rhea's sounds like Dead Can Dance with a chain saw straight through the middle. Chain saw yes. Dead Can Dance, maybe. Take multiple extremes and weave them together. Or just listen. Definately postmodern.
"Revolution is not something fixed in ideology, nor is it something fashioned to a particular decade. It is a perpetual process embedded in the human spirit."
-Abbie Hoffman.
Ritualistic. Ambient. Sensual. Deep with layered guitars. Soaring vocals. Global Rhythms. Tablas and doses of anarchy + esotericism.
Defying genres and challenging limitations in musical boundaries is something Rhea's does well. This is a natural, as Rhea herself (the band's muse) is the Greek Goddess, daughter of extremes - Sun and Earth: masculine and feminine. The eastern concept of Tantra is alive in the music - balancing, blending and marrying the inner and outer extremes of masculine and feminine. There are no musical boundaries in Rhea's Obsession.
Rhea's had her start in the creative world of film soundtrack composition, and the creation in studio sound led to a natural move into live performances. The live performance world kept them on the road in the US for several years. Not a surprise that the film trend has continued for the band - given the filmic nature of their dark, sensual and image-provoking sounds. The band has taken a hiatus from touring of late. Yet with the upcoming CD "WALK ON FIRE" to be released by METROPOLIS RECORDS Spring of 2006, stay tuned for future performance works. Live footage of previous tour performances will be posted soon online - so check back in for the live vibe if you are missing it.
Atmospheric layers of dark and turbulent sounds swirl in the guitar tones and production of Jim Field, above which floats the sometimes ethereal, sometimes wailing Indo-Bulgarian voice-as-instrument sounds of Sue Hutton. These layers are driven and propelled with the extended percussive family joining Rhea's live and in studio. Filling out rhythmic depth in live performances are members of the Rhea's family: Rob Greenway on kit and various percussion, Rakesh Tewari on tabla + various percussion, Ed Hanley on tabla, and Debashish Sinha on various percussion.

Thanks for the add. I love "Death by Moonlight" used in one of the La Femme Nikita TV episodes. That song lead me to the album. Now I very much enjoy your music and originality. Your music inspires creativity and imagination for me in my own writing. Thank you for that.
