With a Brazilian groove that will catch anyone’s attention, Ricardo Vogt is grabbing everyone’s ears. Born in Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil, Vogt was fortunate to grow up surrounded by music. Enthralled by the sounds of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina, it was no surprise that this young talent took a liking to Bossa Nova, samba, and the guitar. At the age of nine, Ricardo won the Traga Sua Musica para o Magic World competition with his own composition and was awarded a trip to Disney World. Aside from playing guitar, Vogt is also an accomplished vocalist. By the age of 16, Vogt was singing and touring with the well-known Orchestra Cassino big band.
When Ricardo turned 17 he then made his move to the United States. Beginning his life in Wisconsin as an exchange student, Vogt decided to stay and study music. Ricardo began his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay where he continued his professional career joining the local “Salute to Sinatra” big band and making his own Brazilian Elektric Band. Vogt also pursued his love for arranging and won the Outstanding Musicianship Award at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival for his arrangement of “Papel Marche/Anjo de Mim” for the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. After two years of study in Green Bay, Vogt was granted the World Tour Scholarship for the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.
During his time at Berklee, Ricardo became an endorser for Godin guitars and has had the honor of performing with incredible musicians, including Rosa Passos and Eliane Elias. Upon hearing Ricardo, Eliane Elias hired him on the spot. Now as a member of her quartet, Ricardo tours around the world and has performed at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Madrid Jazz Festival and the Dinant Jazz Festival along side Toots Thielemans. Ricardo has also recorded on Eliane’s recent album 'Bossa Nova Stories', on Blue Note Records. Another venture for Vogt is his new role as guitar player for Esperanza Spalding's Quartet. Since joining her group, Ricardo has been featured on The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, opened for Santana, and continues touring the globe in many prestigious festivals.
Apart from his roles with Eliane and Esperanza, Vogt’s main project is a duet with jazz vocalist and trumpet player Leala Cyr. A unique combination of voices, guitar and trumpet create their rare duet. Together since 2002, Vogt and Cyr have been arranging everything from Duke Ellington, to Antonio Carlos Jobim, to Guinga. They have given clinics at San Diego State University and the New England Conservatory of Music and have also performed at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival (Chicago, IL), Symphony Hall (Boston, MA) as well as showcases in Los Angeles and Albany, NY with renowned Brazilian composer Guinga.
