Influences

Brian Wilson and his fellow Beach Boys (he will one day overcome his life aquatic fear), Donovan (where your love like anything), The Beat-Less Crickets Spin-off Band (actually, Ringo laid down some great beats and so did McCartney), Buddy (and also the Chubby Big Buddy)...
I could probably go on for a while (and I'm only on the B's still). Film Soundtracks (anything Hitchcock or Herrmann, Ennio Morricone, anything Coppola [Not the big FF but Sophia or Roman]),the hardest working band in show biz, The Flaming Lips (besides that guy [as the camera turns and we see Jonny Carson juggling a car], Sufjan Stevens the artist who I, one day, hope to play as many instruments as, the three Bs as Mrs. McEwen would say (Brahms. Beethoven and Bach), Os Mutantes, classical music, all things introduced by older siblings' (including the expression "all things"), people like Lindsay D who live and breathe music and who share the database of their musical knowledge so passionately; they are the reason bands become bands and, the reason we're all alive, Air (both the band and "O2"). Though my biggest inspiration for all things music, film and storytelling has to be the Spielberg Lucas Williams Ford combo.

"An elaborate blend of roughly 25 instruments into a multicoloured pop crazy quilt"
- Stephen Cooke - The Chronicle Herald (Halifax, NS)

"This guy has made an epic album"
- Whitney Matheson - USA Today (Pop Candy)

"The album was recorded solely by Aucoin on his computer... working with the painstakingly meticulous nature of an animator"
- Matt Charlton - The Coast (Halifax Weekly)

"Halifax’s charming Dr. Seusster"
- Shannon Webb-Campbell - ChartAttack (Canada’s Online Music Zine)

"Like many Canadian musicians before him, he is going on a cross-Canada tour. Unlike all the rest, Rich is touring the country on his bicycle. With all his instruments. In a Grinch costume. Raising money for cancer research"
- Grant Lawrence - CBC Radio 3

"Aucoin creates bombastic, orchestral indie pop soundscapes crafted around abstract lyrics and narratives"
- Vish Khanna - Exclaim! Canada’s Music Authority

"Aucoin is never lacking for an engaging melody or a memorable line. It all helps ensure that Personal Publication stands up on its own merits, rather than relying on its creator to give it character"
- Matthew Pollesel - i(heart)music (Ottawa, ON)

"All fears as to how the experiment would translate in a live setting were quickly allayed once the set began. Both Aucoin’s rainbow-hued sound and this wonderfully ridiculous concept immediately brought comparisons to the Flaming Lips"
- Pras Rajagopalan - Exclaim! Canada’s Music Authority

"He is similarly stoic about the feat of crossing the Rockies without any prior athletic training"
- Helen Spitzer - EyeWeekly (Toronto, ON)

"While the Grinch had a heart that was two sizes too small, Rich Aucoin’s is bursting with goodwill"
- Nick Lewis - Calgary Herald

"A treat for the ears and mind"
- Mike Warner - Torontonist

"10: Top EPs of the Year: It’s one thing to play a ton of instruments on your record, it’s quite another to meld all those instruments into a record that’s an enjoyable listen. Rich has certainly achieved that."
- HeroHill (Halifax, NS)

"The Halifax, Nova Scotia resident who comes off as a Canuck Sufjan Stevens, based on both his sound and the fact that he knows his way around twenty-plus instruments, has created an impressive musical masterpiece that just so happens to serve as a beautiful compliment to the 1966 classic"
- Josh Spear (New York, NY)

"Halifax recording artist Rich Aucoin has done something truly remarkable with his debut EP"
- Hoovaloo: A Blog About Cool And Interesting Things

"Aucoin has an innate ear for melody"
- Chris Whibbs - XPress (Ottawa Weekly)

"Needs to be seen to be believed"
- David Schmeichel - Winnipeg Sun

"This Nova Scotian may be the most ambitious Canadian musician ever"
- Duke of Straw (Pittsburgh, PA)

"Believe it or not, Rich Aucoin has played under his own name for just 9 months"
- Ian Gormely - Halifax Magazine

"A bizarre yet wondrous bit of music"
- Dave Jaffer - Montreal Hour

"Quite uplifting"
- Jonathan Migneault - Mocking Music (Ottawa, ON)

"Taking a classic piece of film history and adding your own touch could easily go wrong, but this one is just right"
- Covert Curiousity (Austin, TX)

"This took time, patience, creativity, ingenuity, but I think you will agree that it was worth the effort"
- B(oot)log (Kingston, ON)

"10: Top Albums of the Year: Rich Aucoin is your average genius"
- Indie For Bunnies (Italy)

"1: Top EPs of the Year: It’s a kick to watch Grinch with an Aucoin soundtrack, but the music stands on its own as an accomplished, majestic work. Multi-instrumentalist Aucoin favors a sonic patchwork quilt approach, à la Andrew Bird or Sufjan Stevens, and his songs have a similar offbeat charm"
- Kofi’s Hat (Los Angeles, CA)

"A Festive Delight"
- No Rock And Roll Fun (United Kingdom)

"Rich Aucoin has taken on the daunting task of writing an entire album that not only stands on its own as a listening experience but intentionally syncs up with a 1966 classic... it’s a great match. I can’t imagine the process of actually writing and recording something of this nature"
- Yewknee (San Fransisco, CA)

"Pretty Impressive"
- DimattiaFilms (Wilmington, NC)

"Best Shows of 2007: Seeing Haligonian and multi-instrumentalist Rich Aucoin step unassumingly onto a stage is like opening a box from Ikea: you think you know what you’re in for, but there are a lot more pieces to the puzzle than you expected"
- Jill Langlois - Eye Weekly (Toronto, ON)

"Top 10 Atlantic Canadian Artists of 2007: 7- The disc is a pop gem on its own merit, but borderlines on genius when synched with Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch"
- Chuck Teed - Giraffe Cycle (Fredericton, NB)

"The album was painstakingly written to synchronize with the movie and grow your heart at least two sizes. Animated whos rejoice with trumpets, evergreens bounce with the hi-hat, facial expressions resonate to the vibraphone, ornaments glisten in rows of the glokenspiel... all in an impressively subtle feat of audio-visual brilliance for the talented multi-instrumentalist and for an album that quite honestly stands on its own."
- Just Sayin Is All (Madison, WI)

"It’s pop art... This Canadian definitely has my attention"
- Pasta Primavera (Baltimore, MD)

"Top Songs of 2007: 10, 342 Cuts For the Us"
- Electric Blogaloo (Toronto, ON)

"This is beautiful Indie-Pop music."
"Personal Publication is brilliant to the point of restoring your optimism."
- trans. Jenner Berger & Giov
- Indie For Bunnies (Italy)

"Officially the coolest music out today - Grade: A"
- Hear/Say: America’s College Music Magazine

"Extremely Magical"
- Chris Whibbs - Exclaim! Canada’s Music Authority

   About Rich Aucoin

In Peter Graves' voice....

What started as a solo recording project has turned into an engulfing year of church organs, thermins, vibraphones and grinches. After deciding to make a solo record while working with some other bands, it became clear that syncing up my debut EP to Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) was not going to be simple. But, after a long solitude with my instruments, a few helping hands brought the project to a completion. Now, at it again, I'm recording my second EP (of a trilogy) with everyone I can possibly fit onto one disc.

Touring Green & Born To Run

Well, last summer I cycled across Canada for my first music tour and raised money for charity at the same time (Childhood Cancer Foundation). This summer, I'm again raising money for charity (The Heart & Stroke Foundation) by running half-marathons in each city during the cross-country tour. Go online to pledge or come out and pledge at one of the shows.
You can read all about the bike adventure in my The Coast Tour Blog You can read all about the marathons and the recording project in my Exclaim! Tour Blog

Theatre

At the request of Dr. Seuss Enterprises L.P., these videos have been retired.

I'm a huge fan of the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon sync with The Wizard of Oz and so I hope that, if you liked that unintentional sync, you might enjoy this intentional one.

Stay tuned for new syncs... this time legal !!!

There are around 150 syncs; see if you can catch them all. If you can't, you can read about the ones you might have missed.

Synchronicity: "is a word coined by the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung to describe the temporally coincident occurrences of casual events. Jung spoke of synchronicity as a causal connecting principle (i.e. a pattern of connection that cannot be explained by direct causality)." (Wikipedia/06)
