Ron's Interests
|
| General | My passions are: the arts (literature, poetry, film, performing arts, painting, music, etc.); fine wine (I used to be a wine educator in the Napa Valley); travel (especially in North and South America); housesitting/caretaking properties (always a good thing for writers to keep the rent low!, so I often housesit for friends as a means of traveling inexpensively and keeping my rent to a minimum--and when I've got a nice situation, I like to host friends as well); social justice/politics /environmental issues, etc. (if you think Bush is an IDIOT, you've already scored points!); spirituality (esotericism of all sorts, especially shamanism, Zen Buddhism, etc. -- I consider myself a "bad Buddhist" ... | | Music | I'm eclectic when it comes to music. About the only things I really don't care for are Christian religious music (though I like a little southern gospel) and country and western (but love Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, who's songs transcend the genre). A child of the '60s, I love rock 'n roll. But older now, my preference is for the softer type: Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, etc. And I can't leave out my greatly talented Celtic songstress friend, Loreena McKennitt!
I'm basically a classic rock 'n roll guy, and typically listen to classic rock stations on the radio. But I like a lot of new stuff, too, and am always looking for the cutting edge of great songwriting.
Some of my very favorite musicians and groups can be seen among my friends (to your right). I love Joni Mitchell, Loreena McKennitt and Madonna. Also, Jimi Hendrix, Leonard Cohen, The Doors, The Grateful Dead (especially awesome drummer Mickey Hart), Tom Petty, Dylan, Van The Man Morrison, Sting and many others. | | Movies | I'm writing a book on this subject, but let's say I LOVE film and spend as much time as possible enjoying movies of all kinds. I'm a film critic, among other things, so I have some pretty strong opinions on the subject. The best films I saw last year are listed on my other blog. Mostly foreign films, these included "The Lives of Others", which won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, beating out my favorite film of 2006, "Pan's Labyrinth" by Guillermo del Toro. The most powerful drama I saw last year was "Notes on a Scandal"; Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett were brilliant as always. I loved the comedy "Little Miss Sunshine", executive produced by my friend Larry Brody's son Jeb. And that early chase scene in "Casino Royale" was alone worth the price of admission. | | Television | I try not to spend too much time on the tube (I haven't owned one for 15 years, and don't regret it), but this winter I did get hooked on "Heroes" and "American Idol" (my guilty pleasure). For me, the best TV in recent years is found on cable, especially HBO. "The Sopranos", "Deadwood" and "Carnivale" are my very favorites; TV doesn't get much better than that! | | Books | Again, this is a big subject for me, since I'm writing a book on my favorite books. I prefer the great dead writers! ha ha But so many of my close friends are writers, that I can't leave them out--especially since I have autographed editions!
If you think the best writers in the world are French (Flaubert, du Maupassant, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, et al) and Russian (Chekhov, Lermontov, Gogol, Dostoevsky, et al), we probably have much to talk about. Currently, the best literature seems to be coming out of Spanish speaking/Latin American writers, from Borges to Marquez.
Hermann Hesse is my favorite writer of all time--a clue to where I'm really coming from. | | Heroes | I have too many to list. Number one on my current list is probably Aung San Suu Kyi, the democratically elected leader of Burma (Myanmar), imprisoned since her election by the Junta that rules her country with an iron fist. She is the "Gandhi of southeast Asia".
