Sounds Like
"He has the voice of an intinerant minstrel: solid, strong, down-home yet with a range and timbre applicable to a stunning variety of occasions. He sounds like a crooner fronting a ragtime band on "When it's Darkness on the Delta" and conjures the ghost of the legendary Phil Ochs on "Brown Recluse Girl"... this isn't a compliment I throw around lightly. Rial exhibits his deftness with whatever blues, jazz, country or folk is thrown at him."--Sepiachord, Feb. 25th, 2009

Robert Joseph Rial is an actor, singer-songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences from Ohio University in 1999. In addition to working on his first musical score, he is performing regularly with his band Bakelite 78, as well as frequently sketching out new material.
Arriving in Seattle in 2009, singer-songwriter and guitarist Robert Rial continues a musical direction he perfected in Chicago and began while in college in southeastern Ohio. Robert plays the styles he loved most: country-blues, Tin Pan Alley, American folk songs, jazz, and mountain music. Many of these styles of music were originally released on 78 r.p.m. records. Some 78's were made from a 'new' material, an early form of plastic called Bakelite. Bakelite 78 records preserved the songs of this era. Bakelite 78 the band was born to bring them back to life.
Robert Rial's choice of instruments in his new group reflected the era of Bakelite 78's repertoire- tenor guitar and tenor banjo, common 1920's dance orchestra rhythm instruments, and stand up megaphone, used to better emulate the singing style of classic 'pre-microphone era' singers. His voice is not so much heard as it is experienced.
Robert Rial's Bakelite 78 will perform on Friday, January 15th at 9 P.M. at The Pink Door at 1919 Post Alley in Seattle. PLEASE SEE www.myspace.com/bakelite78
Robert also plays six-string guitar, and church organ, and writes a variety of rock and blues infused music, often about monsters or sci-fi themes.
