Rob Quest mines the deep soul of Houston hip-hop as each an accomplished rapper and producer. Initially striking gold as a member of the Odd Squad, which released its critics’ favorite Fadanuf fa Erybody on Rap-A-Lot in ’94, Rob continues to unearth musical gems as a leader of the Odd Squad offshoot group, the Coughee Brothaz.
Along with longtime collaborators Devin the Dude and Jugg Mugg, Rob Quest carries the torch for hip-hop presented as a humorous take on the everyday struggles of life. Without a blunt and a laugh, there would be no Coughee Brothaz. And without a rare health condition that caused Rob Quest to lose his sight in ’89, there would likely be no Odd Squad as well.
It was just when Rob Quest was facing the toughest challenge of his life that he began to take up writing and recording music seriously. Known to many as Blind Rob, the Hiram Clarke native put himself to diligent work with a series of drum machines, eventually met up with Devin and Jugg who along with Rob signed to Rap-A-Lot in ‘91, and soon enough Dr. Dre himself was publicly commenting on how much he enjoyed listening to the Odd Squad album.
In the time since his eureka moment of ’94, Rob Quest has primarily played the background to Devin the Dude’s infectious personality. Rob appears in some way or another on each of Devin’s five successful solo albums released between ’98 and ‘08. After quite a retrospective revival of the Odd Squad name by Rap-A-Lot’s reissue of Fadanuf fa Erybody in ‘07, Rob and Devin realized the potential of getting back to promoting their clique as a whole by way of a Coughee Brothaz album titled Waitin’ Our Turn.
Finally ready to step into his own spotlight, Rob Quest uncovered his own solo album titled The Age of Quest in ’09. With its lead single called “Ooh Yeah” grabbing attention from old and new fans alike, Rob’s propensity for down-home, feel-good rap persists. But what’s different this time around is that Rob is speaking from his most mature perch ever, evidenced by songs such as “In Due Time” and “Wind Blows” recounting how he almost fell victim to the wild lifestyle of a touring musician.
With a renewed spirituality in tow, Rob Quest remains focused on his craft and excited about his future.
