RUBY HOWL is a collaboration between Laurie Hall and Patrick Kadyk, husband and wife, poets and sirens, and key members of various San Francisco bands spanning 20 years.
RUBY HOWL: two sparrows in a concrete world. driven to mad wails and haunting lilts, occupied in dreamy persuasions and eerie nooks. Cowritten, cosung and played on handmade banjo's and 4 string parlor guitars swirl in intricate delicacies. Not exactly americana or alt-folk. It is spare, yet snarling into a dark and fragile interlude of longing, despair, and possibility.
Laurie Hall began performing and recording original music in 1990 with indie rock trio Ovarian Trolley who released 3 well received albums, "Crocodile Tears", "Bullseye", "Ciao Meow", as well as multiple singles. Over the course of 8 years they toured extensively in the U.S. and Europe. Their music was also featured in several films. She is also a part of acoustic quartet, "The Hallflowers", singing along side her mother and sister. They've produced 2 albums, "So Nice by the Fire" and "Hide and Seek", and perform regularly. In 1999 she partnered with Eric Drew Feldman to create the internationally recognized band "Knife and Fork", who followed the production of their album "Miserycord", in 2004 with a multi-national tour supporting PJ Harvey as well as opening for The Pixies at the Berkeley Greek Theater.
Patrick Kadyk formed the gypsyish-folk outfit "Hazy Loper" in 2000 and released 3 much acclaimed albums, "Wander On", "High in the Murk", "The Ballad of Lucy Gray". From that time to the present they have done two European tours and were the subject of the documentary film, "Sketches of Hazy Loper", by Davide Vanni. Also during this time he paired with Ryder Cooley to form the gothic-folk duet "The Darklings", produced one album, "Desert Ship", and toured the Eastern U.S.
RUBY HOWL is releasing their debut album "THE WIND AND THE TIGER" on Out of Round Records and touring in Europe this Fall, with drummer Will Waghorn, who is featured throughout the album and has played with numerous indie folk bands in San Francisco, including "Sean Hayes", "The Caseworker", "Jeffrey Luck Lucas", "Hazy Loper", among others.
"Ruby Howl blend asian, middle-eastern, european and latin flares with traditional folk and americana to create something completely their own that has hints of darkness and despair that i will dub "banjo noir". The Wind and the Tiger seems fit for an independent film or a dark alley bar with red velvet curtains and smoke curling around an audience moving in slow motion. Their banjo noir is far too dark and haunting for you car stereo but would be great paired with rich visuals." Lisa Town, adequacy.net
I just put two songs from my new album on my profile. Would appreciate if you gave them a listen and tell me what you think. If you like them leave a comment or you can preorder the album and become part of the booklet. All the best! Gordon
