The Runningonair project is essentially a collection of my recent work. It encompasses aspects of all of my previous music. The name Runningonair comes from the title of a track written in ’96. ..............................................
My music goes back to the early 1980s. My first tracks were experiments with sound recording using acoustic guitar, keyboards and tape; at first reel to reel, using sound on sound techniques and later 4 track cassette. Those early years were initially an experiment in sound and harmony as well as a general learning process. Borrowing instruments and studio time was the only way to get my hands on more sophisticated equipment but gradually I assembled a fairly large collection of electronic equipment. ....................................................
By the end of the ‘80s I decided to study classical composition and entered the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) in Glasgow. During that period I worked almost exclusively with acoustic instruments. At that time I was particularly interested in how and why harmony worked, a question that has never been answered to my satisfaction. I also explored the mathematical relationships within time and rhythm; how to modulate between time signatures and tempos, using harmonic theory but applying it to rhythm. ................................................................
I was at the RSAMD for 4 years, graduating in 1995. Towards the end of that period it became noticeable that television documentaries were becoming increasingly artistic in their presentation. As a result, I became interested in the idea of setting documentary to music. This culminated in a collaborative piece “Beacon Burning” where factual information was presented musically along with vocal and instrumental music. .....................................................
By 1995 I was using computers to realise some of my ideas for acoustic instruments and this gradually led me back into electronic music in the form of a midi based studio, centred around a Mac Classic, mastering to digital cassette. Within that short period at college electronic music had diversified considerably. Like waking up in the future, I started to absorb the new electronic music forms of the time, Trip Hop, Drum and Bass etc. In 1996 my track “Second Thoughts” was released on the ambient compilation “Dream Machine”. Shortly after, I moved to London, working with like minded musicians, I produced a number of songs as well as more experimental electronic works. .........................................................
After tape and midi, it was a surprise how quickly the move to software based studios occurred. Sceptical at first, I quickly took advantage of the new freedoms. As a result, the majority of “Out of Process” was created this way, using Reason and Sonar. ............................................................
Currently, I have a number projects on the go. I’m collaborating with a photographic artist on an exhibition piece. Planning an album of solo piano works and sketching out ideas for a second complete album.
