S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y, The Sunshine Coast Underground Film Festival for Young People started life as M.U.F.F.F.Y in 2006. S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y is a unique film/arts festival and Competition run by young people. Its aim is to support and strengthen the youth arts and cultural community on the Sunshine Coast with a series of public events; including film screenings, film competitions, workshops and discussion panels with professional filmmakers and artists.
From the event's beginnings, the festival has continued to grow. And as one of the region's most progressive youth arts festivals, S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y will continue to grow with the times.
Essentially, the festival allows young people - through the mediums of film and arts - to discuss and explore issues that affect them, bridge gaps in understanding, and challenge perceptions of young people in the community,
Young people and emerging filmmakers are invited to participate in S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y through their schools, other educational institutions or via youth workers and community organisations. And of course, young people are encouraged to sign up for themselves. The S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y Short Film Festival is open to young and aspiring filmmakers of any ability currently residing in any state or territory in Australia.
The idea behind S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y is to let young people take control of much of the festival's direction via Youth Arts Activation Groups. Young people play several integral roles in the organisation of the festival.
These roles - to name a few - include promoting the event, encouraging participation, coordinating ticket distribution, gathering feedback, and evaluating and planning for future festivals.
S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y is an initiative of Sunshine Coast YouthLinx which aims to support young people across all of the Sunshine Coast; in areas of community life, learning, development, employment, culture, and recreation via a range of activities and projects.
FAQ
WILL MY FILM BE SCREENED? All film entries which are sent to us are considered for screening. S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y tries to screen as many films as possible but obviously due to the truck loads received each year, some entries unfortunately miss out. However, every person who enters a film receives two free ticket to their nearest S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y show.... so really everyone is a winner !!
WHERE WILL MY FILM BE SCREENED? S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y screens the most 'entertaining' films at venues all over the coast as well as giving preference to locally made films. This year's final showcase screening (to determine el capitano of the festival) will be held at the Kings Beach Auditorium!
HOW MUCH TO SUBMIT A FILM? CHEAP!!, it's free. Entrants have until May 28th (postmarked) to submit their film(s). All entries must be accompanied with a signed entry from (see blogs).
CAN I ENTER MORE THAN ONE FILM? Filmmakers can enter as many films as they like providing each film has it own entry form.
WHAT IF I MISS THE DEADLINE? Any film postmarked after May 28th 2009 will not be considered for this years competition, but will be eligible for the following years competition.
HOW LONG CAN MY FILM BE? We will accept any film under 8 minutes (including titles and credits), however we prefer films between 2 - 5 minutes. No one wants to sit through a brain numbing 20 minute docu-drama when they can see 3 or 4 better films. KEEP IT SHORT!!
CAN I HAVE A BON JOVI SOUNDTRACK? S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y may accept films with copyright breaches as long as the entrant takes full responsibility. Each film entrant must sign the S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y Entry Form which acts as a disclaimer. You're much better off to get your geeky mate from down the street to bang out a few numbers on his keyboard or trumpet though, then you can enter it in other 'high brow' festivals as well !! There are several websites with 'copyright free' music and sound effects so get on the net and start googling!!
WHAT CAN I WIN? There are several prizes and cash amounts to be won and they get bigger and better each year. Keep checking the web site/myspace for more details.
CAN I STILL ENTER OTHER FILM FESTIVALS? Of course you can !! When you sign the S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y entry form you give us non-exlusive rights which means you allow us to screen your film (including reproducing stills, excerpts etc), but you retain the ownership. Some other film festivals ask for exclusive rights which basically says they own your film and you can't screen it any where else.
WHO JUDGES MY FILM? S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y have a panel of judges . They include a wide range of film geeks, punk legends, street trash, someone that looks like SPIELBERG, and other miscellaneous deviates.
DO YOU HAVE A DATABASE OR MAILOUT THINGO? Yes we do !! We try and send out a e-newsletter every now and then although sometimes we forget. If you want to join our SPAM list so you can receive the latest info then message us your email address.
WHERE CAN I BUY YOUR COOL MERCH? S.C.R.U.F.F.F.Y T-shirts, DVDs will be available for purchase at any of our shows. If you can't wait that long you can email us and purchase via postal mail order.
DO YOU SELL COPIES OF THE SHOW? yes see question above.
