Awards
The annual South African HORRORFEST Awards include both Best Foreign- and Best South African Made Short Film/Video categories. The local short film competition was initially created to stimulate, nurture and develop the lacking horror genre legacy within the South African film industry. However, the increased interest from abroad warranted the inclusion of a foreign short film segment. The popularity of the short film section has grown from the 70 minute collection screened at the first HORRORFEST in 2005, to 3 two hour installments in 2008! With a great part of the SA HORRORFEST consisting of feature films, a variety of awards are appointed each year in several categories. It is 2009 and the South African HORRORFEST is in its 5th year!
Feature- and short film entries are closed and we received another great batch of movies from every corner of the globe. For the half decade anniversary you can again expect a week of exciting, blood-curdling, freaky and scary-as-hell movies on the big screen from incl. new movies, old classics, fan favourites and never-seen-before indies, as well as Halloween dress-up, prizes, give-aways & more.
The SHADOW REALM collection will again compile a fantastic range of short films with a great prize attached for the best locally made short (courtesy of Visual Impact & HDhub, as well as Something Wicked).
The customary classic silent movie, with its new original soundtrack performed live to the screen by TERMINATRYX, members from LARK and others, will this year be the 1925 infernal Italian classic MACISTE IN HELL (Maciste all'Inferno).
The S.A. HORRORFEST also invaded other parts of South Africa for the first time!
This happened at OPPI KOPPI (the country's biggest rock festival, in Northam, Limpopo 7-9 August '09) in the shape of the live soundtrack performance to the screening of F.W. Murnau's legendary vampire movie from 1992, NOSFERATU (by TERMINATRYX, members of LARK and DAWN TREADER)

The South African HORRORFEST (aka S.A. HORROR FESTACULAR) is an annual celebration of Horror in all of its shapes and forms, with the main focus on cinema. A musical element is incorporated with the regular inclusion of silent horror classics with brand new original soundtracks created for them being performed live to the screen. The live performance for NOSFERATU (at the 2006 HORRORFEST) by TERMINATRYX and special guests is now available on the DVD, "TERMINATRYX / NOSFERATU" - see www.TERMINATRYX.com for order details.

The short film competition has both a foreign and South African category. They are compiled into several feature length chapters and screened across the festival week.
This Horror Festival Spectacular is the only one of its kind in Southern Africa - it was created and is run by Paul Blom and Sonja Ruppersberg, and sees its 5th year in 2009.
Based in Cape Town, Paul & Sonja plan to expand the annual S.A. HORRORFEST to other regions of South Africa.
Paul & Sonja are also the key members of TERMINATRYX (and performed a live original soundtrack to the screening of F.W. Murnau's classic 1922 Nosferatu at the 2006 S.A. HorrorFest, The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari at the 2007 festival, with special guest artists)
The 2008 live soundtrack they tackled was for the excellent Haxan. As mentioned above, Nosferatu with this new soundtrack is available on the "TERMINATRYX / NOSFERATU" DVD.
They've produced music videos and the short movie imPERFECTION (also on the DVD). They launched and run the SHADOW REALM inc. horror portal and HorrorFest website. They released their debut TERMINATRYX album mid-2008, and are developing a screenplay for a horror film. In addition, Paul is the South African correspondent for FANGORIA Magazine, his first feature on Neil Marshall's Doomsday making the cover.
The S.A. HORRORFEST, SHADOW REALM inc, and FLAMEDROP PICTURES are subsidiaries of FLAMEDROP PRODUCTIONS, which is owned and run by Paul Blom & Sonja Ruppersberg.
They've also launched two new film festival, The X FEST Extreme & Cult Film Festival, featuring extreme-, underground-, and cult movies, documentaries and shorts; and the CELLUDROID Sci-Fi / Anime / Fantasy Film Festival.

We're inviting film fans and filmmakers from all walks of life, no genre restriction - but especially movie enthusiasts with open minds who can dare to gaze into the darker side of cinema and its artistic and entertainment possibilities as opposed to mere exploitation......
Horror has so many categories that it can include everything from monsters, killers and sci-fi, to comedy, animation, realism, documentaries and beyond...so anything goes......
Musicians and music fans with more extreme tastes and notions, but again, no-one will be discriminated against as everyone's idea of "extreme" will vary......
Each year the festival includes brand new, never before seen indies, documentaries, older classics, rarities, fan favourites, the live soundtrack perfromance to a silent classic (by TERMINATRYX and special guests which usually includes Simon & Sean (ex-Lark) and Matthijs Van Dijk).......
Free opening sneak previews are usually arranged and has included CAPTIVITY and SCAR 3D, and a Halloween dress-up competition and loads of cool give-aways are always attached to every movie screened at the festival.......

About this page: I have been very active in Domestic Violence causes all of my adult life. I noticed a need in the world pertaining to Same Sex Domestic Violence. It happens more than people know. Unfortunately there are a number of gay people who barely consider themselves worthy or valued as a gay person much less a Domestic Violence Victim. There are also very limited resources, statistics, or information, for Same Sex Domestic Violence. Hopefully through empowerment and education we can change some of this. :D
