SAMBADA 2009
While Brazilian natives Papiba Godinho and Dandha da Hora bring their profound knowledge and respect for the roots of Brazilian song and dance, the entire band has developed a unique musical style with a universal appeal. SambaDá musically unites the Americas, drawing from percussion based styles of South and Central American samba and salsa, and blends it with that good old funk and reggae back beat so familiar to crowds of North America. The septet, which was formed by Papiba Godinho, has conquered the club and festival circuit with its wildly explosive Carnaval-like performances.
The band is known for its high-energy percussion, danceable grooves and visually dynamic show. SambaDá is dedicated to making people dance by creating an ecstatic non-stop dance party that appeals to all ages and cultures! With the addition of singer and dancer Dandha da Hora in 2005, a member of the infamous Ile Aiye of Brazil, an authentic Afro-Brazilian flavor has been fused with the band's already potent mash up of styles.
"Ile Aiye" means "house of life" in the African Yoruba language. Ile Aiye, inspired by the black power and civil rights movement in the United States, was founded in 1974 and stresses self-esteem through education and training in culture and tradition. Da Hora performed with the company in 1975 at the age of 6 when it fought to become the first Afro-Brazilian group to participate in the yearly Carnival celebration in Brazil! Basic respect for others and honor of all cultures is the inspiration and work of SambaDa's music.
After a decade of delivering world-beat grooves, SambaDá realized it was time to up the musical ante and create a sound that truly defined the collective as whole. Now SambaDá delivers it's signature infectious dance grooves with a newly inspired sound. Through the years, the band had become accustomed to playing a blend of traditional beats with a tinge of a modern-edge. It wasn't until SambaDá crossed paths with Grammy-nominated music producer Greg Landau to create the 2006 sophomore release "Salve a Bahia" that the band assembled a sound that not only paid homage to folkloric music, but also captured the spirit and musical background of each band member while maintaining a modern and funky edge.
The culmination of this collaboration with Greg Landau and SambaDá is the current album to be released this spring 2009. It will surely push the envelope and re-define the band once again as a truly unique force in the ever evolving face of music and live performance. It is the goal of SambaDá to inspire a positive change in our world by creating a "togetherness" that blurs the line between performer and audience!
SambaDá is one of the hottest emerging groups on the West Coast music scene, with their mixture of hard hitting dance music and exceptional live show earning them main stage slots at most of the major California music festivals this year. In February, SambaDá headlined the 3 biggest carnival parties in California, in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. They were a featured band in the San Francisco Carnival held in May, and have played main stage slots at the Harmony Festival, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Whole Earth Festival. Most recently they headlined the Salem World Beat Festival, where they wowed more than 6000 people.
