  • Bio

March 2011 sees the release of the upfront, taster EP Her Time Of Day from singer/songwriter/guitarist, Sam Hare ahead of the release of his long-awaited debut album, Down To The Sea. Sam’s EP highlights three of the eleven self-penned originals that feature on Down To The Sea which draws on Blues, Country and Southern Soul – an English version of Americana, a ‘real’ sounding rootsy album. Recorded in the old style using analogue the sound achieved is nonetheless very much a sound for today. Reminiscent of The Band or Exile on Main Street, it was mastered by Giles Martin at the world famous AIR Studios, and features a guest appearance by British guitar stalwart, Matt Schofield. A preview copy of Down To The Sea was quickly picked up by Robert Elms on BBC London, who was so impressed by the authentic sound of what he heard that he invited Sam to come in for an interview and live acoustic session. Sam is a Londoner who gained his reputation playing the blues clubs of Britain, alongside artists such as Ian Siegal, Jeremy Spencer (Fleetwood Mac), Matt Schofield, Lee Sankey, Scott McKeon, Giles King, Buddy Whittington and legendary sax-man Raphael Ravenscroft. He was personally invited to guest with Bonnie Bramlett (Delaney & Bonnie) at her last London gig prompting Blues in Britain to write: “Sam Hare can comfortably stand in that long distinguished line of Bonnie Bramlett’s guitar players” Sam is also gaining a reputation as a songwriter, and has collaborated on songs with Ian Siegal and Matt Schofield; Ian Siegal has covered two of his songs so far, ‘The Good Home’ (The Dust) and ‘Stealing From The Queen’ (Broadside). Recently he’s worked with up-and-coming production duo, JetTricks, a favourite of Huey Morgan (Fun Lovin’ Criminals/BBC 6 Music), and has contributed a track for their next album. He has also played several gigs with Saint Jude, including last year’s Bospop festival. Sam has also played with his own band and solo acoustic at Bestival, The Big Chill, and major venues across the UK and Europe. Sam will be on tour in the UK in early 2011, either solo or with his band that features Joe Glossop (Graffiti 6, Saint Jude, James Hunter) on Hammond organ, Fergus Hare on bass and Ed Green on drums.

I am mainly influenced by Blues and 50s Rock n' Roll, and then everything that sprang from that...the obvious blues guys - Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Buddy Guy, Albert King, BB King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Jimmie Vaughan, Stevie Vaughan, Hubert Sumlin, Lightnin Hopkins, etc. I love The Band, Bob Dylan, Derek & the Dominos, early Allman Brothers, Gregg Allman, Eddie Hinton, King Curtis, Aretha, Ray Charles, Billy Preston, pretty much anything The Memphis Horns play on, Delaney & Bonnie, Leon Russell, Gram Parsons, Elvis, James Burton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Doyle Bramhall II, Donny Hathaway, Booker T & the MGs, Sly Stone, The Meters, Cornell Dupree, Creedence, Ry Cooder, The Staples Singers, Derek O'Brien, Duane Eddy... and so on!

Bio:

BBC radio called Sam Hare “…one of the leading talents of the British blues scene.” London-based, and formerly of the popular band Hucklebuck, Hare has just released his long-awaited debut solo album Down to the sea, which is already gaining critical acclaim across the industry – “The soulfulness of Gregg Allman, the painful honesty of Neil Young, and the country/blues mesh that is reminiscent of Exile on Main St-era Rolling Stones or Derek & the Dominos. English, yes, but about as deeply Southern as it gets” (Amazon.com). “…insightful lyrics and masterful guitar… in short, everyone should own this album – buy it now” 9/10 (Blues in Britain). Down to the sea was produced by Simon Law and mastered by Giles Martin (son of Beatles producer George Martin) at the world famous Air Studios. It was quickly picked up by Robert Elms on BBC Radio London, who started playing tracks from the album on his show, comparing Hare to Eddie Hinton, and subsequently invited him to go and do a live session in the studio to 60,000 Londoners in the middle of the afternoon – not a common occurrence for an un-signed artist. Over the years, Sam Hare has worked with many of the finest players on the blues scene, including Ian Siegal (made singing/playing/writing contributions to his last two albums The Dust and Broadside), Matt Schofield (co-wrote ‘All you need’ on ‘Siftin thru ashes’), Scott McKeon, Otis Taylor, Jeremy Spencer, Buddy Whittington, Lee Sankey and The Spikedrivers. He was also personally invited to sit in with Bonnie Bramlett (of Delaney & Bonnie) at her London gig in 2005. Of this gig, Blues in Britain claimed: “…Hare can comfortably stand in that long distinguished line of Bonnie Bramlett’s guitar players” (that have included Duane Allman, Steve Cropper, Albert King, Eric Clapton and George Harrison.) Outside of the Blues scene, Hare has played several gigs with Saint Jude, and has recently written and recorded for the next album by the up-and-coming Jet Tricks, a favourite of Huey Morgan (Fun Lovin Criminals/BBC 6 Music). With various line-ups, Hare has played to packed houses across the world, including the USA (Austin, New York), Russia, France, Holland, Germany and Sicily. He has also appeared at major international festivals such as Bospop, Bestival and The Big Chill. Sam Hare’s current live line-up consists of his brother Fergus Hare on bass, Joe Glossop on Hammond organ, and Ed Green on drums. They are the house band at the popular Wednesday jam session at London’s Charlotte Street Blues.
