Band MembersSimon Bradley is concerned with an amplified cello whilst Mark Webber ponders an array of oscillators. We improvise freely in a live manner and avoid all post-production fx and overdubs.
InfluencesEmphasis is on fundamental principles. Our interest here, however, is not in the musical, but in mechanical and electrical systems. Sounds quarrel, fight, and when they are of equal strength destroy one another, and give place to silence. That then will be the basis of everything we do.

   About S&M Combo

Simon Bradley (cello) Mark Webber (electronics)

S&M Combo (erstwhile S&M) started in 2004 as a development from a previous collaboration as interestfreetelevision. Discarding the use of samplers, loops, processing and computing, S&M Combo focused on free improvisation with their core instruments: oscillators and cello. The duo combines many extraordinarily unlikely sounds that lie poised over the visceral interface of harsh mechanical noise coupling with serene minimalist beauty. The initial simplicity and immediacy of their improvisation gives rise to ever more complex and exotic, aleatory forms. By exploring both the delicacy and raw power of such simple systems they are musically part Jonathan Harvey and part Whitehouse, or like a physics lecture gone astray.

Simon and Mark have worked together over the past few years on a variety of projects and have played at events such as the Leeds International Film Festival, Termite Club Festival as well as at the respected Klinker Club and Bohman Brothers’ nights in London.

S&M Combo completed its first UK tour in autumn 2007, sponsored by Jazz Services. We would like to thank everyone who helped make it possible - it was a great success, and we intend to do more gigs in due course

Check out www.sandmcombo.com now and again, but there's not much there yet apart from a link to here. S&M.... Combo Yah!

We record all our live work and intend to release a compilation at some point. In the meantime, we are entering a dormant phase due to work commitments.

Book tickets here.

One of the highlights of the Vortex London Jazz Festival – TIME OUT

Featuring Fyfe Dangerfield (from Guillemots), Gannets posit an alternative jazz history in which 30's swing developed straight into a combined form of the free jazz and fusion movements, without any of the intervening decades.

Fyfe Dangerfield - keyboards + electronics
Alex J Ward - clarinet
Christopher Cundy - bass clarinet
Dominic Lash - double bass
Steve Noble - drums

Yay.
Finally this ones out!

SUNKEN.- 'Eye Electric Organ, Brain Electric Nerve'.
Deep in the swirling depths of the ocean a terrible yet wondrous beast stirs slow but sure amidst great forests of sea algae. Taking on the form of a pair of conjoined drown-ed sailors it sets forth upon the currents determined to loose its apocalyptic vision upon the earth via droning sea shanty and great humming hymn.
Sunken is the duo of sunken sailors Stefan Neville (Pumice) and Antony Milton (Nether Dawn/A.M etc). Using a range of organs, sonar gear, live tapeloops, vocals and an unhealthy amount of submarine reverb they create a glorious droning pop noise. 'Eye Electric Organ, Brain Electric Nerve' follows on from their acclaimed self titled debut (also on PseudoArcana) and various compilation appearances.
You can hear a sample from the album here.
CD. NZ$20 (post incl)
