A singer/songwriter based in Brooklyn, I am currently performing my most recent solo work ("Songs of Lewis & Clark") as well as performing with two bands: one inspired by traditional old-time, bluegrass and blues tunes (tentatively named the Union Street String Band) and one inspired by all kinds of rock (Too Big to Fail). I’ve posted a few new band recordings above; you can still listen to many of my Lewis & Clark songs if you scroll down in the music player. In the Union St. recordings, it’s myself on mandolin and harmony vocals, Dave L on guitar and vocals, Alex B on dobro, John C on banjo (and vocal on Circle) and Jack McG on bass.
"Songs of Lewis & Clark" is a song cycle setting the journals of Lewis and Clark to music. With lyrics taken directly from the journals, the songs reveal moments of awe, reflection, humor and joy during the course of the 1804-1806 expedition through the newly purchased Louisiana territory. The 17-song album was released November 23, 2008. To purchase the album, email sarabouchardmusic@gmail.com.
Born in Stockton, California, I left the west coast to attend college at Yale University where I studied art and music composition and received my bachelor's degree in studio art in 2003. I moved to New York in 2004 and have since been teaching and making art and music in the city. I have performed at various venues in Brooklyn and Manhattan including the American Folk Art Museum and participated in JezebelMusic.com's Resonance series and the 2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition. To learn about one of my visual art projects, check out the online journal for Urban Plant Research, a collaboration between myself and Leslie Kuo dedicated to investigating the lives of plants in the city.
My art collaborator Leslie and I hosted an open "acoustic jam for the plants" during our last exhibition at Open Source Gallery. Here's a clip of the song "Angel from Montgomery" by John Prine - with my bandmates Dave and Jack on guitar and bass as well as our friend Kate on bassoon!
Hey Sara! Your songs are beautiful! I want to see you play them! I am playing a gig tomorrow night at Rose Live in Williamsburg if you're free and want to come - it will be cool! - Alejandra
